Wonton soup, fried rice, and spare ribs hit the spot so well tonight after yesterday's fasting. I got hit with some awful bug, or maybe food poisoning--fever, chills, throwing up, the works--on Thursday. I thought it had lifted Saturday morning only to have it come back with a vengeance that evening, and Sunday, not sure what was going on, but sure my digestive track still wasn't working right, and I wasn't ready for a job interview Monday. So I rescheduled for Wed, fasted all yesterday--the biologic equivalent of pressing the off button to reset this whole damn errant machine, and it seems to have worked and I'm better today. Yay!!! Saki and Tuxie took good care of me all the time I was abed sick--Saki holding my head with velvet paws and a musical rumble, and Tuxie tucked in my arms against my chest and tummy.
So another editing job interview tomorrow-- wish me luck!
I never heard back from that earlier interview--they had been interested in a team, so I recommended them my awesome coeditor L., and she interviewed also--still nothing. I also had an interview with someone L. knew at the Smithsonian looking for a researcher, but I didn't expect that to pan out, and it hasn't.
The week and a half before my job ended I was a whirlwind, managing to get appointments with my pcp, gyn, lab tests, a mammogram, a pelvic sonogram the gyn recommended, and an eye exam--all in a week and all came out fine, so I'd be set for the unemployment transition. I had to fight my employer to get my COBRA papers sent in a month, but I find my COBRA has proven too expensive at $700/month, double what it cost when I was unemployed 3 years ago. So I've been looking into other health insurance options, and sending for their info, and it's just been a lot of paperwork to go through. Which doesn't leave much time for job hunting. I did wind up getting unemployment insurance through DC. Next week I have to go into DC for a job workshop, even though I'm looking for jobs in Maryland, not DC, but that's where my unemployment benefits are coming from, so that's where I have to go--a waste of time.
But I get to work on all these links and paperwork sitting on my couch, sandwiched between purring Moo and Saki, so life is good. Until I got sick last week, I was getting to take walks everyday around the lake or go for a swim, and feeling much more fit than I have in a while. L. came over a couple of weekends--we had a big end of contract party, that extended to another weekend watching the extended LotR trilogy while munching on yummy stuff, so that was a good time. Next up, we watch The Matrix trilogy, which I haven't seen before.
I'm still going out weekdays to the garage in New Carrollton to spend a little time with the strays. It's been going on 2 years, and wouldn't you know it, but I had a break through with Brigit. Ostra still touches nose to my fingers pretty regularly, and occasionally I can give her a pat, but never Brigit. The week before last, Brigit came up closer to me than she needed to reach her food, and turned her fluffy back on me to eat, so I gave her a gentle pet and she jumped away, but came right back, with a look of "all right, that was OK, heh--just had to try it." Today for the first time, she came up and touched my fingers. I now think it more likely than not, that if she could be in a room with a sleeping human she could chose to approach at her own pace every night, it might take several months, but she would eventually be pettable, and maybe a year or so, she'd be a skittish, but cuddly lapcat. I think Ostra is too much of a free spirit to want to be in a lap, but she'd be an affectionate leg brusher, and smart, entertaining companion. They're not ready for prime time yet, but I think they may be getting there. And I'm not worried they'll let down their guard with strangers anymore than before, thank goodness, because there's plenty of scary people who would do them harm.
I'm looking forward to getting the insurance matters settled, so I can finally get some time to really dig in on working on the home organizing project and sending out letters and things I have for people, if I don't luck out with a job before then--either way, it's fine.
