We just had the hugest earthquake I think we've ever had here. The hugest I've ever been in. Much bigger than the one we had in 2001. Things have fallen all over the place in here. One glass candle stick got smashed, but all else is OK. Kitties are all OK.

Holy smokes! That sounds worse than most of the ones I've felt here in California.

Thank you!! The center was south of DC. It went on for a couple of minutes. I gotta go reassure some kitties, pick up stuff, and clean up some glass. I sure hope there won't be aftershocks.

It was a 5.8 so you've probably felt worse, but it's the worst I've ever been in. But the epicenter was close, so it really shook things up here. It went on for a couple of minutes. Wish us luck on no atershocks!

Oh good--I'd thought of you being in the central area and got scared!! We felt it here, too. *I* didn't, dunno why/how as the whole Western Ma. area is reporting big-time quaking. :S Stay safe!!

Thank you!!! It went on for a couple of minutes! I'm in a cinderblock building, so about as safe as you can get, but things still fell around here. My brother in south Jersey was in his car and didn't feel a thing and felt bad he missed it.

In all honesty, me and my co-worker were bummed not feeling it... it's that OMG want to be afraid, I guess! I just don't want anyone hurt or destitute from it all.

Sure, it's like a big EVENT--you want to be part of the experience, even though you don't want any damage from it.

Seeing the tornado that went through town here back in 2011 (911, earthquake, tornado--we had it all that year) was one of the scariest things I ever experienced and left me scared of storms for a few years, but I'm sure I would have felt a little bummed if I didn't see it, as you know from your recent tornado. The pack animal instinct we have is weird that way.

I just heard about the quake. I'm glad to know you and the kitties are ok. *hugs*

holy crap, I'm glad you're okay! That must have been scary (earthquakes are so freaky to me)

Thank you! Aside from promptly laying down on a glass shard from the broken candle stick, Ms. Moo seems to be fine. *sigh* *hugs you*

It was freaky. For me, it wasn't as scary as the tornado I saw 10 years ago. It did feel like it went on for longer than it probably did, though. It just seemed to shake a bunch of times before things started falling over.

It was for our area, though it's not anything compared to the ones you get in your area with tsunamis to follow. *hugs*

Yeah, we were in the library (in central Ohio) and the supervisor's husband called her. He felt it at their home, but we really couldn't tell- there's been major demolition of an old factory building going on fairly near us, so ground shaking isn't unusual. I expect we would have noticed something going on longer, like he called to report. But who knows?

When we were leaving this evening, I told her to be sure to have him check the USGS website. The explanation tab about this quake explained that the quakes east of the Rockies are far rarer, yet often are felt at much greater distances than the west coast ones. There's lots of techno talk about slippage and so on.

I can still recall the two small quakes that we had back in the what, 80's? They were bad enough to make things fall from shelves, but nowhere near the 5.8 that the USGS is assigning this Virginia quake.

Glad you are all only unsettled, and nobody's injured!

Oh wow! I've been away from LJ for a bit (DIL visiting from Florida), but heard about the quake on the news. Glad to know you & kitties made it through ok with just a bit of broken glass. *hugs to you & ear scritches to kitties*

Yeah, it seems to be about the kind of rock and being in ht emiddle of a plate, rather than on the edge of one like out west, that makes it transmit further. But since the on edge western ones can be much stronger, I think it's only fair that ours can be felt further away. (-; The only other one I was sure I felt was in 2001 and it was just a 2 point something. This lasted so much longer and was so much more intense. Thank you, monks!! *hugs*

Thank you!!! The three of them went to huddle in the center of the apartment--I'm glad they are so smart! *hugs back*
