I saw RotK again this week and I have to say it's a way better movie if you take a bathroom break during the lembas scene.(-;

Though I'm sort of disturbed that the very last drawing at the end is of the Ring--like couldn't they leave us with the One Tree, or the Sea, or a Hobbit garden or something less menacing--the drawings were exquisitely beautiful and a wonderful way to do the credits. I'm so looking forward to the EE.

And some of us were having a fun discussion here--I so agree with [livejournal.com profile] barbary_coast's take on Arwen. And here's my main picky Frodo-centric gripe: Wingnut did such a magnificent job of giving the Ring a tangible presence in FotR, but they almost entirely dropped it in the next two films. Only emphasizing the Ring's agency and its growing struggle with Frodo would have given justice to the sense of Frodo's inner struggle and the growth of his will therein as his body weakens. All they had to do is make the Ring's whispering get louder and more frequent and give us some flashes of the Eye from Frodo's perspective as he holds it, like they did in FotR, or show him starting to see the world as the Wraith world toward the end without even putting on the Ring. A friend who hadn't read the books told me it seemed to her that Frodo didn't sacrifice as much as everyone else, and I figure that is due to Frodo's inner struggle just not coming across. My guess is that Wingnut got so caught up in the wonder of the creation of their Gollum, that the Ring as a forceful character got subsumed in their fascination with their creation, and as [livejournal.com profile] seigneurdeloups has argued elsewhere, they made Gollum be the focus of the struggle instead of the Ring.

Speaking of struggle, yesterday, when I treated myself to my favorite pizza at the local mall--a mall that gained brief notoriety for housing the gym a few of the guys who hijacked the planes on 9/11 worked out at--I watched through the parlor's glass as a little girl completely lost her temper, dramatically threw down her leather jacket and stood belligerent clad in a puffy sleeved white blouse yelling at the top of her lungs at another little girl,and then walked toward the doors. The other little girl rummaged in her little purse and pulled out a nasty, fucking, BIG-assed dagger and stalked after her.

Some guys in the parlor were laughing, "Cat fight--my favorite kind!"--fuckers. A Woman of Sense scolded, "Aw, they can't be 13. Someone get security!" She asked the pizza parlor guys to make the call, but they were laughing like the other guys, so I don't know if they were going to do it, and the Woman of Sense grabbed some other folks and went after the girls, so, since shouting for security wasn't going to work because my voice is still croaky from my cold, I went off to find mall security, but found the office locked and empty.

When I came back everyone involved was gone, so I trust they managed to break it up for the time being. I could have asked the amused spectators at the pizza parlor, but I felt unsettled and just left. Witnessing stuff like this is always a bit unsettling.

But I'm having a nice, peaceful day. I got asked to interview for a temp to perm court docket job today. It would be good work doing research for cases on occupational hazard violations by corporations--I wonder if I had put on my resume the organizing work I've done for graduate student unionizing if that would have made me seem more qualified for the job or less--can't put my lesbigay activism work on my resume either. But I start a great new job on Monday, that should involve much less stress than that one, so I took a pass on this interview. This year has wrapped up nicely for me. I'm damn lucky. I'm looking forward to the new year. And now I'm off to struggle with open the champagne bottle.(-;

Happy New Year to you! Well, I hope and do think it didn't go past posturing, but those little girls need the well wishes much more than I, because they've obviously witnessed and probably experienced more of it.

I think so.(-: I hope you're feeling better today and your throat's better..
