After hearing the latest RotK spoilers, I was bummed . . . and then I remembered MESPT. Thank you Frotima and Carawise. (-;

If you haven't followed MESPT this won't mean anything, but if you have and read spoilers, here's an RotK Spoiler MESPT-style icon from Tom and me: click not lest ye be spoiled, unless ye wantsa. :-D

I can tell ya here--no one should be clicking this whose worried about spoilers, but just in case, I'll leave a space here.

OK, there was a thread on the White Council from someone who saw an early release, that I then saw discussed on adrienne's (ninglor) page. Apparently, there's going to be a scene in which Gollum convinces Frodo that Sam is stealing all the lembas and gets Frodo to send him home, but he comes back. I think they're going to have that instead of the scene where Frodo accuses Sam of stealing the ring. Sound awful and stupid or what? Also the theatrical release is leaving out the "whether or no" line, Gollum's moment of almost healing, and mention of Sam being ringbearer at the end and that he will eventually sail too.

Of course, maybe those parts will be in the extended, but letting Gollum, and not just the Ring get between Frodo and Sam like that kind of lessens the emphasis on the Ring's power as well as the bond between Frodo and Sam, so it sounds like a stupid choice that the extended won't be able to fix and much more fitting for our MESPT version of the pair. /-:

Isn't it? PJ must have been on the same stuff he was on when he decided to have Brego kiss Aragorn when he came up with that one. But I'll see for myself how it plays out anyway.

So, thinking of your Frodo makes the stupidiness of this plot turn feel better--it bummed me at first--I may even have to suppress my inappropriate giggling in the theater. (-;

Ahaha aww :) Although, to be honest, the lembas thing sounds like something that Frodo would do, ahahHAHha.

Seriously? Tolkien's Frodo? Ahahahaha! Nope, can't see it me self. (-:

That does sound odd. Tolkien's original scene reveals just how much the ring has already corrupted Frodo's soul. Swapping that moment for 'Bad Sam! Stealing my lembas (which I wasn't eating anyway)!' cheapens the moment.

Assuming that this spoiler is true, I gotta wonder why Jackson decided to do it. Perhaps he thought that his change would make it more obvious to newbies. Filmmakers have to make choices like that, unfortunately.

As for Brego... I actually liked that scene. It was one of the only 'comic' touches in TTT that I did like. Overall, I think that Jackson was too heavy-handed with the humor in TTT.

It certainly does. It makes Gollum the powerful influence over Frodo instead of the Ring. I like that they've emphasized the kinship between Frodo and Gollum--supposing it isn't a coincidence that they both have huge siamese cat eyes--but not at the expense of lessening both the Ring's pull and the power of the bonds of love and companionship. However, they've emphasized Frodo's kinship with Gollum at the expense of the idea of Frodo's empathy, and I think this may be another instance of it and I don't like that--it's what I value most about the character.

I do understand cinematic constraints and am not a purist--I love some of the changes made to the story in FotR, but I don't see how this change helps. Still, I haven't seen it yet, so maybe that will clarify things. Maybe PJ(and maybe Boyens and Walsh) doesn't pick up on the importance of empathy--I thought he did in FoTR by making Gandalf's speech about pity and mercy central, but maybe that's not the part of the speech that moves PJ but the second part--that you've got to do your part in a hostile world--which is probably the part he focused on to get where he is as a producer. Successful people in the movie industry don't tend to get the idea that sometimes people really do need extra care and concern because we don't all have equal abilities, let alone opportunities.

It didn't quite work for me as a humor moment and was just an ewwww moment. Hehe. I agree.

I'll second that question: which spoilers? I haven't been keeping up with the movie spoilers.

Are you planning to go to one of the special showings of FotR and TTT in the theater before RotK? Have you bought your ticket for RotK yet? I haven't. I'll probably see it at the Rio multiplex in Gaithersburg. For TTT's opening midnight show, the Rio had initially planned to put it in one theater, but so many people showed up they just opened another theater and showed it on two screens. I am hoping that they do the same thing for RotK.

OK, answered with what I heard. (-:

I haven't gotten any tickets yet. I didn't opt for Trilogy Tuesday, not just because I'm job hunting and don't know if I'll have the whole day free for sure, but mainly because there's no way I could sit through all three in a row and enjoy myself. I think that would have been true even when I was a youngun, but I would have probably tried--age does have it's advantages. (-;

I do want to see both extendeds separately on the big screen at the Uptown. Do you want to also? If so, would you like to coordinate going together to one or both? "Twould be fun.(-: As for the release of RoTK, are you doing midnight or the next day, and would you like company? I haven't been to the Rio--is it stadium seating and good sized screens?

From: [identity profile] barbary-coast.livejournal.com

I don't think that I want to see the extended versions in the theater. I'm spoiled by being able to see them here in the comfort of my own house. It's wonderful to be able to get up and walk around during the bits that I don't like (Helm's Deep). I would love company for the midnight show of RotK. I was hoping to catch the midnight show and see it the next day. The Rio has stadium seating and decent sized screens. I'm old enough to remember REAL movie screens, so no multi-plex screen even comes close. But these are okay.

If the Regal Germantown or the Kentlands theaters are going to host a midnight show, I would rather go to either of them over the Rio. The Germantown theaters are still new and the facilities are much, much nicer than the Rio. The Rio staff tend to be rude, and the parking there is crummy. I will check around and find out which theaters are showing the movie and get back to you.

OK, thanks.(-: I bet Columbia's Snowden Square is showing it--I like their theater--but is that too far for you?

From: [identity profile] barbary-coast.livejournal.com

Columbia would be too far for me for a weeknight show (especially the midnight show). I've got to go to work the next day. Be fine for a weekend show, though. :-)

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Understood. Since it's not likely I'll have a job by Thursday, whatever theater you think is good is fine with me--I just might need directions.

From: [identity profile] barbary-coast.livejournal.com

I checked Fandango.com. There is a midnight show at the Regal Germantown. I will call and reserve 2 tickets tomorrow (Wednesday).

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Thank you. There is the small possibility that I will get that job and it will start before then, and if so I may have to cancel, but I'll still cover my ticket. I think having plans that could be messed up by getting this job is good luck toward getting it, so all's good.(-;

From: [identity profile] barbary-coast.livejournal.com

No problem about the ticket! You getting that job is vastly more important than driving out to Germantown for the midnight show. We'll have plenty of opportunities to see it again.
