On my way home from an afternoon walk last Sunday, I was waylaid by vagrants as I approached my building. Furry vagrants to be exact. Hungry and affection starved furry vagrants, hanging out in the bushes.

The ginger boy ran right up when I called, his cali-gray tabby sister a little more reticent at first. I brought them down food and water and a fleece pad, and then called the town no kill shelter we have, left a message, threw out my evening plans of getting anything done, and sat out to wait upon their Adorablenesses for a while--a tough job, but I was up for the challenge.

They seemed to be about 5-6 months old siblings, totally socialized with meows, purrs, head butts, and lap cuddling skills, well bonded to each other, so obviously some awful human just dumped them.

The tiger girl is mostly gray tabby with a gorgeous amber necklace, nose, occasional spots, and in rings on part of her tail.

The ginger boy has the longest tail with a cotton ball white tip, and eyes that angle down on the outside corner so that when I went inside and looked through the glass door at them, he looked up at me with an expression of maximum patheticness that would do Shrek's Puss-in-Boots proud.

"Mr. De Mille, I'm ready for my close-up."

"Oh boy, I am, too!"

"I'm doing my sexy kitten look."

"Whut's a sexy kitten look? Do you have a piece of string I can play with?"
I love the shine in his eyes this pic caught.

I called the shelter again in the morning from work, and they came and got them. They have several younger kittens right now and say it's been slow at getting them placed, so I'm hoping these 2 won't have to wait too long before getting a home--they are a pretty perfect pair. Sooo cute and loving. They just need an available human in petting range of them to land a home.

I went and visited them in the clink after work on Wednesday, and the tabby girl was not at all skittish about affection and was happy to sit in my arms immediately, so being at the shelter is definitely better on their nerves than the great outdoors. They're getting neutered this weekend, and then will be let loose in a small room with 5 other adult cats, but it's got windows, and a cat climber, so not bad digs while they wait. If you know of anyone in driving distance of the DC area looking for a pair of kitties, please link them here.

My Not Quite Ready For Prime Time feral sisters at the metro garage are still doing well. After a year of spending a little time with them on my way home from work on each week day, we're making a little progress--I can pet Ostra a little, and she likes to touch her nose to my hand on greeting regularly, but she's still very skittish, so they're still only ready for a home with someone very patient and good with cats, or a barn situation. I've got lots of pics of them to share in future posts.

They're gorgeous! How could anyone abandon them?

I am so glad they found you.

How wonderful you are to take care of them, and how fantastic that you have a shelter in your area which actually comes out to get the cats. Unbelievable! Those are great photos. Too bad you can't take them. It looks like they are shooting you love rays from their eyes. :)

Thank you! I wish I could remember where I found it to credit it. I have another one I got from a general icon website that I will show you. :)

What sweeties! Humans who abandon animals should be left naked by the side of the road in wild country where they don't speak the language.

They are uber-cute.

Some folks lack spoons and may be evicted themselves, some believe stupid shit about cats being able to fend for themselves or that making them fend for themselves is more humane than the possibility that they might get euthanized, but most likely it's an irresponsible fucker who needs to be treated as you said.

so obviously some awful human just dumped them

You heard about that woman that placed that cat in a dumpster and just left it? If folks don't want cats, don't get any but don't be cruel to them. Don't undersand it.

There is no end to human stupidity, irresponsibility, and ways to rationalize away compassion. These guys were pretty hard not to love.

BTW, I just sent you an email.

You're such a loving, wonderful person! Lucky (and beautiful) kitties have a whole new life to look forward to now.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Awwww, thank you. But it doesn't take much of a heart to be smitten by these two--they are well trained in the art of appealing to humans. *squishes you*

They look like dolls, and such an affectionate pair. Someone is going to be a lucky cat owner. Adoptions are slow here, too, but these two are such charmers.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

They are total gorgeous charmers, and are quite adept at demonstrating how affectionate they are with each other. I hope they land themselves a good human.

And Hi! I hope you're doing well, along with your 3 furry wards. (-:

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

I think they will do well. You showed us how charming they are in your photos. They are no doubt even more charming in person!

I am fine. I got to go back to my minimum wage part-time job shelving books at the library again (all the City part-time positions were cut two years ago, so it's been a while), which pleases me and pays the vet bills. I've been gardening a lot, as we had more house-yard projects going on, too. Bad knees have prevented me from taking walks this year but they're improving.

The cats? Elsa and Charles are rip-roarin' whippersnappers still although they had their second birthdays last month. Angelo is hanging in there, although he is very thin in his long decline. I thought he would be dead in a month back in May, but with thrice-weekly subcutaneous hydrations he has been hanging in there. Still eats a little, bony, but also still a lover boy, like a limpet, wanting always to be on our shoulders, in our laps or snuggling with us on the couch or in bed.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

I think so, too--they are charmers. And although I was worried how they will do in a little room with 5 older and bigger cats when they get let out of their crate, as you remind me with mention of your little ones, it's those older and bigger cats I should be worrying about. (-:

Yay on the library job being restored! I've been through years of bad knees--I hope they'll get better quickly and let you get back to walking. Glucosamine with chondriton daily and at least once weekly swim help (and having one less flight of stairs than in my previous apartment to deal with when carrying up groceries also helps.)

Oh, snuggles to Angelo! May his loving heart carry him along for much longer than predicted. What a sweet kitty. If only we could get rocking chairs in the sun for Angelo and Saki, so they could sit and kvetch together about the lousy kids they have to put up with. (-:

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

I think they'll be fine with a larger group. Cats that can get along well with one other cat can usually extend fellowship to others. They just need the appropriate introduction period. You shelter people probably know about this. Wanting their wards to be adopted, I think most try to make it happen.

I take my glucosamine with chondriton haphazardly, as I take all my supplements, but I am improving. I bought myself a knee brace today at the drugstore. I had one a while ago, but gave it to my daughter, for running.

Angelo, I fear, is finally going into the Last Decline. I may be wrong, I was wrong in May. But I think rocking chairs in the sun would be on his wish list -- as long as amenable humans sat in them, in whose laps he could loll. :)

They're such pretty little cats. It's a shame they were abandoned.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

They really are gorgeous. I can't fathom where someone must be emotionally to abandon such loving little souls.

From: [identity profile] honeyandvinegar.livejournal.com

Oh, so darling. Like little pressies, even if you can't keep 'em. You're a kind, lovin' soul. :)

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Yeah, spending time with them was such a twist of my elbow--ouch! Thank you, hon. Not a person here would fail to be at their beck and call if waylaid by these smooth operators.

I love how you are like the Mother Theresa to the cat population there!!!! :))) They look like sweet, happy little kittehs!

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Heeee--well, I'd have to work much harder to elbow out the competition for that title around here--this town is filled with pet people, and that's why we have our own no-kill shelter. And I have another fellow crazy cat lady living a couple doors over, who has been doing her share of rescuing kitties. They were well handled at some point in their past. Totally adorable pair.

Aww, what cuties!! I can't believe some people, just dumping such adorable cats. :(

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

They totally are. Maybe their people had let a cat get pregnant thinking it would be so much fun having kittens and that it would be no problem placing them, if they even thought that far, and found it wasn't. It could have been someone without enough spoons who wasn't doing well in keeping a roof over their own head, someone who stupidly believes cats can all fend for themselves in the woods or convinced themselves of that, lacking the research skills to know there was a no-kill shelter right down the road, or just a typical irresponsible person lacking caring who should be kicked in the butt repeatedly. They definitely had been well-handled at some point. Whatever the story was, it's sad. I hope they land a human who makes up for all of that.

From: [identity profile] strangemuses.livejournal.com

What dear kitties. I'm so glad you found them. Now they've got a chance of leading a contented, comfortable life.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

They are as cute as it gets. I hope they land them a good human, but in the meantime, they have each other, feel much safer and content, and they'll probably have fun driving the older cats in the room crazy.(-:

From: [identity profile] green-ghost.livejournal.com

YAY for you! So kind of you to take the time to make sure they are safe. They are beautiful.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Thank you! It was an ordeal totally against my will to spend time in the presence of such adorableness. (-; They really are a beautiful pair.
