Do any of you have pet insurance? If so, any policies you recommend?

My Saki is getting up in years at 11 and has a slight elevation in her thyroid levels, so I may be looking into expensive treatments a little down the road.

My experience is out of date, but what we found when we looked into it a few years back: the more cats you have, the more expensive it is.

Also, the older the cat is when you sign up, the more expensive it is.

It may still be worth it, but make very very sure your vet can do the paperwork (because we also heard that there were problems in that area).

Thank you. So you haven't gotten any pet insurance?

It doesn't look good, from what I've seen so far. Just like with humans, they exclude pre-exisiting conditions, and although she hasn't been diagnosed with a thyroid problem yet, the higher levels in her bloodwork indicating the possibility are probably enough to count as pre-existing condition and be an exclusion. Plus they might consider it an inherent condition as well. Also, some policies won't take a cat her age at all.

We don't do pet insurance.

Oberon had a thyroid condition (he had everything before he died - diabetes, cancer, deafness, thyroid condition - oh, he was a tough cat) and Taz currently has a thyroid condition. I think Valiant may, as well, but he hasn't been tested yet. At any rate, when Oberon was alive he was on the same med that Taz is on now - he gets a tablet twice a day and we buy 100 at a time for about $40-$45. At the moment, that's our only major cat healthcare expense and it's not that bad, all things considered (Oberon's cancer operation ran just under $1,000).

I used to have a policy for Lola and Brutus, but we cancelled after the insurance starting denying anything we submitted. Also my vet hated doing any kind of paperwork. If you do find a good policy, let me know, as I would like to have one for Minx (being a Manx) and Brutus (having asthma).

I have no advice whatsoever but I sure hope that Saki continues to be as healthy as possible!

Thanks for the info. My doctor is suggesting that if we determine she does have a thyroid condition down the road, to go with a radiation treatment that cures it, rather than the pills. She's young enough at 11 and otherwise healthy enough, that she's still a good candidate for this. Also my doc is a minimalist, so if she's suggesting this more extreme method, I trust it really is the best for her. It's $1200, but over the long run, will wind up no more than the pills, and best to get this balanced before old age brings her other ailments.

Thanks for that info--I was afraid that might be the case. Yeah, my vet didn't seem very encouraging about insurance though she didn't discourage. I'm seeing all preexisting condition clauses, which pretty much rules out its usefulness for anything illness related, so there's really no point.

Thank you, hon! I'm going to do everything in my power to help her be a kitty longevity record breaker one day.

No, I don't have any, Lavender. Good luck on your search.

What if you, like for humans, made a kind of health savings account for your cats? Pay into it what a premium would normally be (or more if you can swing it) then withdraw as needed. Luckily, since most people don't do pet insurance, vet fees are not inflated like doctor fees are, so it should work.

By the way, I realized while looking at something that I have folded on my bookshelf, that I didn't bring you this mathom that was meant for your kittehs! While it is for all the kitties, I think it suites Suki most. I might have to have you email me your address so I can send it to you at some point in the foreseeable future! :))

Doesn't seem anyone on my flist does, so it makes me think that it may not be a worthwhile option anyway. Thank you!
