This Froday froggie wishes you a happy weekend!

DSCN1731

I saw this little American bullfrog down in Greenbelt lake in April. Not so little, this frog was as big as my hand, at least. I figured out the mystery of why I've been seeing so many frogs this year--it's due to the late winter. The grasses and shrubs that grow around the lake block my view of much of the bank at full growth, and they were late in starting. So the frogs came out of hibernation before the foliage grew high and thick enough to block my view. I'm not seeing as many frogs now through the shrubbery.

Same frog from a different angle. Just a pickle with legs.

Froggie! Greenbelt Lake 4-13
And maybe there are more frogs this year in conjunction with the 17 year cicadas emergence, and they are awaiting the arrival of their cicada feast.

I like his camo spots. He's a handsome fella, for a frog.

Aw, a pickle with legs is such a cute description of this fellow. A cicada feast with a pickle on the side! :-D

She is! None of the others around here I've seen are so vividly spotted. I think she's a female because her ears (tympanum) and eyes are the same size.

She is! I've read up and the females have tympanum and eyes the same size, and are bigger than the males, and she's a big one. I saw a bigger one today, but not near as pretty as her.

An adorable pickle with legs! Thanks for letting us peek into his world.

:-D I think she's female--I looked it up and females have tympanum and eyes the same size and are bigger than the males, and she's a big froggie.

What a cute frog! I saw a couple of toads during my exploration of the park near my home. I also had a large toad residing in my yard for several days :-)

You had a toad squatter! (-: She's one of the prettiest frogs I've seen here.

i love him! Back when my kids were tabpoles, we bought a tree frog. He was a charming, delicate-looking little thing. The first night we had him, we were in the living room after supper and there was this sudden, bass-ish *booming* sound. All that very deep and serious sound coming from that little man. We named him B Minor (the chord I was learning on the guitar at the time, which sounded kind of bass-y and dissonant to me)

Miss that boomin' B.......

Awww, what a great story! Tree frogs can be very pretty. How long did he live?

I think this one is a female after looking it up--tympanum (ears) are the same size as her eyes--males would have larger tympanum, and females are bigger than males and she's a big one. She is a pretty pickle.

man, he lived a loooong time. Not sure exactly, but I would say at least 5 years. I got a better one. When my daughter was 'graduating' from elementary school, i went to pick her up. She had a jar w/tadpole in it. "mom, can i take this home?" (sez i to self: 'that's safe. Poor thing won't ever live")

When she graduated high school, we still had him. And he was HUGE. OMG, she cried so hard when the poor guy died. I had to bury him in the back yard.

Oy.

Awww! I got a little red-eared turtle when I was 7 or 8 and he was still around when I left home at 22. Cleo lived 20 years and was several inches long. He would scare the crap out of the cats when he'd march around. (-:

There are some at my mom's house, but I don't think I have any here that I could scan.

I can put up pics for you of many other turtles who reside at the lake if you'd like. In fact, I ran into a foot long turtle today ambling along the walking path who I helped over to the edge of the lake where ze wouldn't get trampled.

Happy weekend to you, too! Such a handsome frog. I can hear frogs here from time to time, but have yet to see one (I'm pretty sure they aren't as big, as that fellow, though).

Thank you, bb! (-: She is a big one, which means she's probably female. I've been hearing them for years, but have not seen so many before as I have this year, now that I know where to look for them.
