So far, I'm loving my job. Editing does get really tedious, and I am in the honeymoon period here so we'll see what I have to say in 6 months, but for now I'm having a good time with it. I just finished editing the English translations for a Punjabi reader. Now, I'm working on a Cantonese dictionary. And being the nerdy sort who has always enjoyed reading dictionaries, I'm having a good time with it.
I have my own office with a nice, big 5th floor south window, but people stop by and visit so it's the perfect balance for someone on the extrovert/introvert line like me. The people here are great and I've never felt so welcome and appreciated at a job. Again, I know I'm in the honeymoon period, so we'll see, but thus far, I'm not sensing tensions, rifts, or cliques among my coworkers. It just seems to be a great collection of friendly and nerdy folk.
The one hitch came on my first day when I had to go to the corporate headquarters in Virginia--not a nice feeling place--and learned that I don't get health benefits like I was told in the interview. So I'm staying in my spot with the 40 million other Americans still. I do, however, get half-time holiday pay, so tomorrow I am getting my first paid holiday ever for MLK day--whoo!
Now I have to get my head out of the Tolkien immersion I've put it in again since RotK came out and get back to integrating my dissertation work into my schedule and things will be rolling here.
Sends hugs to
anneheart and hope the cold breaks and makes you feel better--miss seeing you on LJ, and to
abandonada that you keep up your strength, and to
seigneurdeloups for warmth.
