It is sooo fucking embarrassing to be an American./-:
And it's going to be more embarrassing next year when they actually elect Bush this time, for which today's election looks like a harbinger.
We live in stupid times. Really stupid times.

It's just that yesterday's election doesn't bode well for enough Americans really caring about the real issues you've raised. Enough wealthy Americans are doing quite well and they don't want the tide changed. And the ridiculousness and Teutonic splendor of Ahnold wasn't enough to motivate enough people to stop the Republican tide; it encouraged them to flow with it. That's damn scary.

Alas, I do think that you are correct about Bush being reelected next year. Sad, huh?

Yes, well, that's part of the stupid factor--those who think that they're not supporting the Republican party or Bush's establishment that Davis was only working under. But I think a lot of it was about supporting Bush because the only guiding thought is "I don't want my taxes raised." There's a lot of wealth in them thar hills in CA and Davis' "sins" were that his policies affected the rich--what Bush does to the poor of the US and Iraq is of no concern to them--and if it helps the wealthy, all the better.
I doubt that much will really change in California.
It's not CA that I'm worried about. Much of the country laughed at the time when they elected that actor Ronald Reagan in CA, and then a little time passed and they voted him president. And it just keeps getting grosser, doesn't it?

Today sure took us many steps closer to that. I still hope not, and will vote Democrat and rail against it until it's a done deal, but I'm braced for the worst.

Bush has a lot of rich supporters who are just with him for their pocket books and if he gets too gross policy-wise with anti-queer initiatives, he might lose some of them, and I don't think he wants to risk that. This Marriage Protection Act is a mean-spirited ploy in its timing, but its not policy changing, so he can get away with it with his mercenary crowd. It's just its coming at the same time that Ahnold comes to power makes it feel so much worse.
If it were only that easy.(-: Thank goodness for imaginative spaces to escape to for a little bit each day!

Yes, it does continue to get worse. The average citizen knows virtually nothing about politics or world affairs beyond the soundbites they hear on the evening news -- assuming they even watch the evening news. TV news is aimed (the last time I checked) at a population with a 5th grade reading level. 5TH GRADE!!! But these same people sure do know everythng there is to know about their favorite celebrities! So combine ignorance with cynicism with celebrity worship and voila, California elects Arnold as governor.
