Oy!

It is sooo fucking embarrassing to be an American./-:

And it's going to be more embarrassing next year when they actually elect Bush this time, for which today's election looks like a harbinger.

We live in stupid times. Really stupid times.

And I'm hanging my head in shame right along with you. :(

Bush is already in trouble over the economy, the Iraq mess, and the CIA mess, all of which are getting worse. Don't give up.

Nah, I'm not giving up--just letting out some frustration, anger, and a bit of fear. But thank you. At least some of the rhetoric the Democratic presidential candidates are spewing is better than they've been delivering the past couple elections--if only their records and policies matched up--still it's a step in the right direction for them, way too tiny step though it is. I'm slowly trying to make my way through the websites of the candidates I don't know enough about to see whose policies and voting records I like best before the primaries. I'm underwhelmed by Dean, but could deal with him. Since the Greens aren't fielding anybody presidential this time, I'll definitely be going Democrat.

It's just that yesterday's election doesn't bode well for enough Americans really caring about the real issues you've raised. Enough wealthy Americans are doing quite well and they don't want the tide changed. And the ridiculousness and Teutonic splendor of Ahnold wasn't enough to motivate enough people to stop the Republican tide; it encouraged them to flow with it. That's damn scary.

It's scary. How do we get it through Americans' heads to stop identifying with these Teutonic dreams of power and start realizing that we're all in this together, even the powerful idiots in their McMansions, and vote against these fascists? Le sigh.

Isn't it horrifying? I am VERY GLAD I don't live in California, but still, that marriage "protection" huge steaming honkin' load of HORSE SHIT has me screaming inside. That proclamation is SO wrong, on SO many levels, it makes me feel violently ill. GRRRR.

And IF Shrub actually does get elected? Will have to start checking on patriation to Canada. I mean it.

I'm not so sure that the recent California escapade was about supporting the Republicans so much as it was an expression of sheer disgust at the establishment. People weren't for Arnold, they were simply against Davis. Not that it will matter. Arnold S. is as plugged into the political power structure as Davis. I doubt that much will really change in California.

Alas, I do think that you are correct about Bush being reelected next year. Sad, huh?

Yes, well, that's part of the stupid factor--those who think that they're not supporting the Republican party or Bush's establishment that Davis was only working under. But I think a lot of it was about supporting Bush because the only guiding thought is "I don't want my taxes raised." There's a lot of wealth in them thar hills in CA and Davis' "sins" were that his policies affected the rich--what Bush does to the poor of the US and Iraq is of no concern to them--and if it helps the wealthy, all the better.

I doubt that much will really change in California.

It's not CA that I'm worried about. Much of the country laughed at the time when they elected that actor Ronald Reagan in CA, and then a little time passed and they voted him president. And it just keeps getting grosser, doesn't it?

Today sure took us many steps closer to that. I still hope not, and will vote Democrat and rail against it until it's a done deal, but I'm braced for the worst.

Cookie? Milk? (-;

The Marriage Protection Act is bothering me muchly, but truthfully, not as badly as when Clinton signed in DOMA, because this is exactly what we should expect Bush to do. This really has far less damaging effect than Clinton's signing DOMA because it was a blow from someone who should have been our ally.

Bush has a lot of rich supporters who are just with him for their pocket books and if he gets too gross policy-wise with anti-queer initiatives, he might lose some of them, and I don't think he wants to risk that. This Marriage Protection Act is a mean-spirited ploy in its timing, but its not policy changing, so he can get away with it with his mercenary crowd. It's just its coming at the same time that Ahnold comes to power makes it feel so much worse.

If it were only that easy.(-: Thank goodness for imaginative spaces to escape to for a little bit each day!

Yes, it does continue to get worse. The average citizen knows virtually nothing about politics or world affairs beyond the soundbites they hear on the evening news -- assuming they even watch the evening news. TV news is aimed (the last time I checked) at a population with a 5th grade reading level. 5TH GRADE!!! But these same people sure do know everythng there is to know about their favorite celebrities! So combine ignorance with cynicism with celebrity worship and voila, California elects Arnold as governor.
