Last weekend I had the great fortune to join up with some of my hobbit posse in Manhattan to see the FotR symphony, a Tolkien manuscript exhibit, a talk with Howard Shore and some other Tolkien experts, and Billy Boyd's band Beecake. I'm still recovering from a sore throat, congestion, and tiredness, but it was totally worth it, as it was a wonderful time.

I drove up to [personal profile] lbilover's Thursday evening, where I met up with her wonderful self again, and met for the first time the delightful [personal profile] frodosweetstuff and [personal profile] belleferret. They had just gotten back from a Woodjin tour of the Pine Barrens. Having gotten lost in the Pine Barrens when I was a lil kidling, I was with them in spirit on that. Lbilover drove us into the city--bless her--to the Holiday Inn Midtown where we stayed for 2 nights with 8 hobbit dolls. It was quite comfortable, in a good location, and there was enough room for the hobbit dolls to skate back and forth on ice cubes without getting in our way.

Left to right, that's my Bingo and Sam with their stuffed koala and oliphant mathoms that Bilbo gave them this past birthday, Frodosweetstuff's very stylish Frodo with a nice shoulder bag and Sam with a spiffy leather jacket, oblivious to the other hobbits' presence as they make out, Lbilover's's Sam and Frodo who are old hands at multi-hobbit doll meet-ups, and Belleferret's Frodo and Sam, a little nervous at first at being around all these identical hobbits.

We left the dolls to party while we went to catch the subway down to Joe's Pub in the East Village for the Beecake concert. We met up with [personal profile] aliensouldream there, who is so full of fun energy. If you've read Belleferret's or ASD's reports, you know that we had interesting company waiting on line to get into the concert with us. First we saw Howard Shore arrive and stand around by the line talking with friends. Then everyone got quiet and vibraty, and I turned around and saw Elijah Wood's un-mistakable lovely face about 3 feet behind me. So that was fun. The loveliest part was that it was a line of about 100 people or so, all fans who recognized Elijah and Howard, and yet only one or 2 people went up to bother them for pics, so they could run about like other people. It's nice to know not all A-list actors and Oscar winners are pursued by paparazzi or have to live in a People's Magazine type world. It's also nice to see these old coworkers being friends and supporting each other's gigs. They wound up sitting at tables with their friends in different ends in the middle of the room.

Joe's Pub is a neat venue with a very high art deco ceiling over a framework of industrial pipes--kind of a steampunkish look. And we got a comfortable table in a front corner. The concert was fun. I wasn't wowed by the band, but their instrumentals were very good--a pretty Beatles-esque pop-rock-alt sound. I'd prefer Billy to use his gorgeous voice in a plainer style than the stylized way he uses it here, but it was still nice. I got a fuzzy pic of Billy on the way out.

The next morning we got up to go to the Tolkien manuscript exhibit at Fordham University a few blocks away and met up with ASD again. There were all kinds of things in the notes on exhibit that we're guessing haven't all made it into the HoME. I'm still reading through those, so I'll keep an eye out to be sure. But there were lists of hobbit measurements that we hadn't seen before, and I'll write up some notes I took of those in another post. There were notes on the Shire calendar, and on the languages. There was an ink drawing JRR had done of the Doors of Durin. And there were gorgeous drawings of pages from the Book of Mazarbul, that looked to be colored with colored pencils--lovely colorings. There were also graphs putting the happenings in LotR along a time line. We made many happy sighs as we read in the graphs, "Sam rescues Frodo." Lbilover pointed out, with much gratitude to the Professor, a wonderful sentence under a discussion of languages, that in comparison with "Bilbo, Sam, Meriadoc, or Peregrin . . . Frodo was more skilled in unusual sounds." It is a gift, a gift to the hobbit slash writers! Why not use this gift?

I was pretty felled at this point and all day by my time of the month coming full force with its accompanying TMI woes, but I soldiered on. Well, I whined quite a bit, but there was still so much fun to have this day, I still managed to have fun and not ruin anyone else's. We went to have lunch at the Trump building, and then went on to the Apple Store to accommodate Belleferret's religious practices. The hobbit dolls came out for a group shot in front of the Apple Store:

Then we went to FAO Schwartz to accommodate my religious practices. Bingo and Sam had an encounter there:

Luckily, this dragon only liked his hobbits with mustard, and there wasn't any mustard to be had there.

We went back to the hotel to rest a while, get changed for the concert, and wait for Lbilover's and my hobbits to get changed into their evening wear, and then we taxied down to Rockefeller Center to meet up with the lovely [personal profile] honeyandvinegar, [profile] panmodal, [personal profile] verangel, [profile] nuke33, [personal profile] aliensouldream, and [profile] frolijah_fan_54. FF54 and we 4 hobbit doll wranglers went for the 68 story view at Top of the Rock. On the way up the Hobbit dolls posed in front of the window facing Radio City Music Hall's marquee.

Then we headed up 68 stories, and what we saw will be the subject of the next post.

Damn damn damn damn those shots are peaches!
Especially the Radio city ones.
how did you do those?

Heeee, thank you! The sepia and black and white edgings are finishing effects I applied from the iphoto application that came with my macbook.

Tank you! You should check out the photos my fellow crack doll photographers listed above have put up in their reports.(-:

It's too bad we didn't find any good Hobbit clothes at FAO, but I'm glad they didn't have mustard!

Something I really enjoyed was how other people reacted to our dolls. I wonder how many other web sites and blogs their pictures are showing up on? :-D

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

That's OK--they are overpriced, as would their mustard have been, so that might have saved the hobbits anyway.

Yeah, people this trip were much better than the little kids who sneered at me in disgust my last 2 doll outings. (-:

True, our dolls may be all over the internet--those jet setters!

Love the way these pics are done!

Whew, that scary encounter was a close call. What if there had been mustard there? *shudders*

I've been loving reading everyone's perspective from the NYC trip. Those dolls just kill me.

my time of the month *Hugs you* Uggghhh.

The hobbit dolls came out for a group shot in front of the Apple Store How nice of them to cooperate. lol

I bet your dolls are tugging at your sleeve to take them on an outing to meet some other dolls.

Tank you! Stoopid body! *hugses*

Well, any store with a food name is going to get their attention every time.

Great pictures. So cool to see all the hobbit dolls enjoying NYC.

Oh, Lavender! What a great post! I loved reading your report and loved your droll, whimsically captioned photos. You have been to the Pine Barrens? Of Eastern Long Island? Heavens! My family lived there, just a few miles from Westhampton Beach and its airport in Coast Guard housing between 1991-96. I fear I thought the Pine Barrens terribly scrubby as woods go, but I appreciated the quiet, and the deer out in the playground and on our porch. :)

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Aww, thank you!

No, these are the Pine Barrens of central and south Jersey. I didn't know they had Pine Barrens in Long Island. My brother and I got lost in Wharton State Forest in central Jersey when we were wee tots. And [livejournal.com profile] lbilover's S/E Woodjin novel is set there, since she lives just outside of Pine Barren country now. Here's some pics if you goggle New Jersey Pine Barrens,

From: [identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com

The NJ pine barrens look a lot more appealing. Here's an image I found of the pine barrens in eastern LI. "Dwarf pitch pine and scrub oak" is what grows there. That about describes it: "dwarf" and "scrub". It's very valued, though, because beneath it is an aquifer of top quality water.

Huh. I guess ocean wind across the island requires low growth, maybe. The hobbit dolls might like that though. (-;

Or the all-sand soil. Not very fertile! Yes, it's the right size forest for hobbit dolls, but still, very barren compared to their verdure they're used to. If Bingo rode Saffron into it, both of them would be scratching their heads, and bellies. Not much of anything tasty for an oliphaunt to eat, or a hobbit. Long Island pine nuts sprinkled over a bed of thistles. :)

They'll make sure to have a goodly supply of lembas and roseberries with them then before exploring it. (-:

Oh my those pictures are irresistible! I can't stop giggling and melting at the sight of all these hobbits, four couples actually. And each one has its style and fashion tastes.

What a lovely post, I'm so glad you ladies (and you hobbits) had such fun while in NY!

*hugs you*

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Yay! (-: They are their own hobbits.

Thank you--it was a blast! You need to join us next year.

*snugs you*

It is a gift, a gift to the hobbit slash writers! Why not use this gift?

LOL!!! *dares you*

Then we went to FAO Schwartz to accommodate my religious practices.

LMAO!!! Me too.

Oh this was so much fun. Love the sepia treatment in front of RCHM. What level were you on to get that shot? It's fabulous!

Seeing the 8 there like that makes me wonder if there are Merry and Pippin dolls. Can you imagine a con of 4x4??

I'm so glad you enjoyed the exhibit so well, I loved it too. Just to see his writing and what's it's meant to us all - amazing!

Such a great treat meeting you and I'm already looking forward to next year!

*hugs mightly*

I think it needs to be a Waymeet prompt. *firm nod*

Toy worshippers unite!

I think we were just on the second story. Thank you!

No, I don't think Sideshow is likely to make us Merry & Pippin dolls ever, unless marketing for "The Hobbit" gets big enough to retcon onto LoTR marketing. However, I am custom making a pair. I have a good start on a Merry--I found someone on ebay who makes doll heads for Charlie from "Lost" that I just need to give a shave, paint job, and apply wig. I may have to do more work in sculpting a Pippin face--still trying to decide which of two heads I have will make a better base. Maybe I'll have them done by next year. I have an Elrond I need to put together first though. (-:

It was. It was quite an eye opener, too, to see all these world building bits that still haven't been published even with the massive work his son has done with the HoME. Hobbit toe nails! Wheee!!!(-:

You're a total joy to be around, sweetie. We need to plan earlier so you're not stuck on your own hailing cabs on dark streets, too. *hugses*

Love little Frodo and little Sam. What fun adventures they had!

Was so nice to meet you :)

From: [identity profile] frodosweetstuff.livejournal.com

Yay, such a lovely post!! *happy memories* I so love that our hobbits had such a good time. Hehehhe about your comment about FAO Schwartz!! :))

*squishes you* Let's hope our hobbits (and us!!!) will meet again soon!!!

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Thank you, hon!

Well, you know, there's RotK here in September . . . (-;

*hugses*

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

TTT is in October in NYC.

RotK symphony with the film is September 11th at Wolftrap, an open air concert shell in Virginia that is a 45 minute drive from where I live. A few people are planning to come already, so I'm going to plan a moot and reserve a guest apartment in my building, and maybe reserve a motel room nearby if more people decide to come. Cali and I will also be putting up a couple of folks at out apartments. Come if you can! (-:
