I had the bestest evening going to The Birchmere in Alexandria to see The Roches, whose harmonies were just fabulous to hear live. Suzzy's stories are very amusing, as you would expect, very much in a Tommy Smothers sort of style. Highlights were their rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus, Want Not, Anyway (one of their new ones), and their last encore which I didn't know the title of Yakketty-Yak, maybe?--very fun.

It's been several years since I've gone to the Birchmere--they were in a smaller place then, but it's still a wonderfully relaxing venue for a concert since you get to sit at tables and have food and drink brought to you during the concert--a proper hobbity way to enjoy music. I was so glad to get in as I wasn't able to get an advanced ticket.

And I found at their shop that Kate Bush's new cd is out that I've been looking forward to--I nabbed the only copy there. So woooot! And I also bought a cd of Steeleye Span's--who I saw many years ago in Chapel Hill--I only have one other of their albums on cd. So a veeeery musically satisfying evening for me--first I've had in a long time.

And sometime this weekend I'll go to see Narnia--I know Tilda Swinton is going to be wonderful, and many of you, my flist-mates, are raving about the film already, so I'm looking forward to it--what a treatful weekend!

In other news, fafblog is wonderful as ever with a fine explanation of Bushonomics.

???????? You live by DC??? *confuzzled* Did I know that? I grew up there! And, do you know, I always wanted to go to the Birchmere, and never did? *pouts* I'm a big folk musick fan.

Yes. Greenbelt, MD. How would I know, silly hobbit!? And I didn't know that either--what town? You've mentioned your folks are in NJ, like mine are. I was born in Camden--which is the most dangerous town in the country right now, so yeah, I'm bad. I spent my first 22 years in Southern NJ--the lil town of Collingswood, then went down to Chapel Hill, NC for an MA in Folklore--stayed on 9 years, then came up here for a PhD in Engl--where I'm still ABD after 12 years. *sobs*
I was brought up as a wee one on Pete Seeger, the Weavers, and Leadbelly (as well as the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, classical music and broadway musicals--that was my childhood musical canon.) My college years I got into the Celtic folk revival and caught a lot of concerts in Philadelphia, and then when I moved down to Chapel Hill as well, where I also added on rockabilly, the lesbian music circuit, punk, and more blues and plain ole rocknroll.

Well, you have to come out here and we'll go! They have tons of concerts I always want to go to, and then don't. It is an hour's drive for me. But I went to this one, I did! And it was great!(-:

No, mine are still in VA; you're probably thinking of somebody else. Collingswood? *ggl* I JUST got a DVD set of Dark Shadows, which happens in Collinswood. *G* ABD? Oh, yes, all but diploma - know what you mean. Folklore? What a cool degree to get! Our music experience sounds very similar. I grew up on Peter, Paul and Mary and The Kingston Trio... then John Denver... a bit of rock... then Appalachian music in college and, like you, Celtic in grad school.

I grew up on the VA side - Springfield, VA.

Ah Ok--I thought I remember you taking a trip to Jersey that I thought was relative related, or I'm mixing you up with someone else's report.(-; And yup--it is one letter away from Dark Shadow's town. (-: All but diploma--ahahahhaha! You are kind.(-: Yeah--I learned a lot. (-:

My company's corporate headquarters is in Springfield, right across from the mall there. I was out there for our T-day lunch gathering last month.

*L*! It IS a small world! Lord, I remember working at the Montgomery Wards there (when there was still a Monkey Wards) and wandering the mall during my lunch break.

You saw Steeleye Span LIVE?!? I love them.

Which CD did you buy? I have lots of Steeleye Span on vinyl - but I'm in the process of trying to convert most of my vinyl to CD. It's no eary task, and will likely never be completed (I do not expect to ever find, for instance, a CD version of my vinyl album titled Traditional Music of the Shetland Islands by a group called How to Change a flat Tire.)

Yeah, I did.(-: And I interviewed one of them--the fluffy haired one I think--and now I can't remember his name--for a paper I was doing on the Child ballad The Three Gypsies, that their Black Jack Davey is a variant of. My fav Celtic band to see live though was Silly Wizard--Andy Stewart and the Cunningham brothers were hilarious together.

I got Gone to Australia. I just had Sails of Silver and Allison Gross on vinyl--if I'm remembering the titles correctly. And yeah, I'm currently in the middle of that process too. I've actually been surprised what I have been able to find on cd without even searching very hard yet, especially what's turned up for under $2 at my thrift shop--I scored a copy of Steely Span's Time cd there.
