I'm so glad that in his state of the union speech on Tuesday President Obama is going to be calling for raising taxes on the wealthy and increasing leave time to better the conditions of US workers, so we can tend to more than just our jobs. I'm still grateful for his part in getting rid of pre-existing condition exclusions for health care and setting up my nation's baby steps toward universal healthcare. Of course it's messy as hell--having no health insurance when you're sick is so much more messy and fatal. This was a momentous accomplishment that has made so many lives better in the US.

Sure, I disagree with many of his choices and policies--his failure to revoke bank execs giving themselves bonuses during the banking crisis, embracing of the Patriot Act that infringes too far on civil liberties in the name of security and his use of drones, and toleration of Guantanamo.

I don't know enough to say he shouldn't have bailed the banks, because the rebounding of the economy may owe some of its source to this. He could do more to address climate change and supporting alternative energies, but he's done some good in that direction. He's done some good for indigenous peoples and immigrants. He has slowed the damage done our nation by years of Reagan and Bushes, and now he's working to reverse the Bush tax cuts. That would give us a better chance of keeping bridges, overpasses, and buildings from collapsing and killing more people than terrorism will ever accomplish, pull more women raising children out of poverty, and give more kids who might create something that makes a difference a chance at an education.

And he's done all this while even the liberal press has declared his unpopularity. They cry he is so unpopular when he has only 40% approval. But in a nation when far less of that public even bothers to vote, that is actually a sign of vast approval.

He's been the best president in my life time. I hated the whole hope and change garbage of his first campaign, but he accomplished much more than I expected, and for that I'm grateful. If we can do as well with our next president and not go backwards, better times could be ahead.

I have decent health insurance -- and greatly improved health -- thanks to Obamacare.

I'm pretty passionate about the Affordable Care Act and time is proving that overall it's been a very positive thing. We've been having sign-ups here at the library and distributing materials since it started. It's not universal health care, but it is a baby step in that direction. From what I've been reading, Guantanamo is being emptied finally, so perhaps before he leaves office, that promise will be fulfilled. And Obama has been pushing for Net Neutrality and saying he'll veto Keystone XL. Two huge positives. It seems to me that in the last year there's been a sea change in him. Maybe he finally accepted that there is going to be no compromise from the other side and he has to forge ahead and do what he can legally do without them. I think any attempt to raise taxes on the wealthy and close loopholes is probably doomed, but I'm glad he's going to propose it at least. Best president in my lifetime? I don't know, but I feel better about him now than I did a couple years ago. My dream ticket for 2016 is Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. Too much to hope for, I suppose, but damn, I wish they would run.

It's great you can be part of helping people sign-up.

I think you're right about his forging ahead. The attempt may be doomed, but it's important to get the idea out there to mainstream its legitimacy for if there is ever a time Congress is in a position to do something about it--in an alternate future in which USians vote in midterm elections--when we don't vote, the Republicans always win.

There's a company right up the road from the library that is contracted by the feds to sign people up for the health insurance marketplace. But they prefer to do sign ups in libraries, because they say that people trust libraries and librarians. Kind of a nice tribute to us, I think. :-)

That's been my impression, though I don't follow politics nearly as closely as I used to, so there may be other things in play there.

There may be. I'm no political junkie myself. But it's the impression I've gotten from Obama and some stuff I've on the NYT website.

I agree with this so much! Although I have health insurance, at some time under Obama, I no longer pay copays for my female exam and my hormones (a form of birth control) are free.

And as my mom says all the time, there's really no other explanation for the type and depth of hatred toward him other than racism. Obama has done a huge amount of good, considering how much opposition and uncooperativeness was against him the entire time.

Not sure I can decide on a best. Maybe LBJ except for Vietnam so no. Worst is hard too, I hate all the Bushes but I hate Reagan so fracking much. Blood pressure rising.

Thank you for putting words to a lot of my thoughts about this president. I know it's illusion but I have felt safer since he took office. I wonder what his next act will be.

I agree with you so much! :-) There has definitely been bad in with the good, but so much of what he has managed to accomplish is such an encouragement after the last president.

I'm a little afraid of the next presidential election, though. On the plus side, the Republican debates are sure to be entertaining. :-p

I agree with so much of this and think the good definitely out weighs the bad. Imagine what he might have accomplished if Congress had dropped their hateful agenda to oppose everything he supported no matter what it was.

Thank you for putting this reminder out there. I feel it's all too often overlooked!
