I made the discovery last week that wild azalea blossoms are even more beautiful before they open. The buds are suffused with so many colors, especially if the mid-afternoon light is just so. And they're furrier than you'd suppose. This is, of course, down by Greenbelt Lake.
The magnolias we had around where I grew up in New jersey didn't have much scent, but southern magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora) grow some up here in Maryland, and they have a really strong, lovely scent.
