A very happy birthday to the maker of the wonderful Tiny Bag End, [livejournal.com profile] obeliamedusa!!! Saki salutes you festively from her good ship, The Plum Hork, with Bilbo in Bag End behind her-- a pic I took earlier this month. (-:

SakiTinsel.12-12

I'm so glad we mooted 2 weeks ago and I'm grateful to all who made it. I was sunk in an early winter depression since Hurricane Sandy came through the end of October, and hanging with ya'll really helped pull me out of it and get my equilibrium back. So thank you, you guys! <3

So I should do a little report, though I probably won't add much to Tree's report. [personal profile] mews1945, [livejournal.com profile] lovethosehobbit, [livejournal.com profile] ancalime8301, and I met for a quick dinner Friday night, after some really yucky traffic getting there and then went to see The Hobbit in 3D. The theater advertised that it was in HRF 48, but I'm pretty sure now it wasn't. Mews was the happiest with it. The rest of us had more mixed reactions. I will say, having had a sinus headache that day and then slogging through some bad traffic that lead to the 3D making my eyes really sore colored my reaction a lot.

Saturday, I took it easy at home and then went back to join the crew, with the addition of today's birthday grrl for dinner at Libertore's for a nice meal, with a rather over zealous waiter who amused us. I took Mews home after dinner, then went back to the hotel to join Tree, Obelia, and Cali. We had a really nice low key companionable evening chatting as Tree and Obelia assembled a Hobbit Lego set, Cali did her needlework, and I played on my laptop, reporting on what reviews of TH were up and I subjected them to a TH/Star Trek crossover crackfic I did an outline for that I haven't dumped on all of you yet. They let me stay in the room that night anyway.

Sunday, Tree accompanied me on the ride back home to feed the kitties, and we got her checked in to her motel by the airport on the way, then we drove back to Westminster. Obelia and [livejournal.com profile] elanor1013 joined our original 4 to see The Hobbit in 2D this time. I think we all enjoyed it much more on second viewing. I promise a full review soon--I just saw it my third time--this time definitely in HFR 48, and in IMAX 3D, and I loved it--3rd times the charm. I mean, it's not FotR, but it's a lot of fun and beauty. We then went to Denny's for their Hobbit themed fare and Elanor and I established that we had met before at the DC LotR meet-up group and caught up on an acquaintance. I got the Gandalf Gobbler sandwich again because it was most excellent. And for dessert, Tree got what we're calling Radagast's Red Balls--whut? They're red velvet fried dough balls with a bowl of icing dip and she magnanimously shared them with all of us--and they were very yummy. Then I drove Mews home for our sad good byes and Cali took Tree, and we all went our several ways home from there. And that's my short and sweet moot report for a short and sweet little moot.

And here's my menorah at full display below from earlier this month. Along side it is a great little orchid I got a couple of months ago that's been blooming its little heart out. My orchid next to it, that I've had for 3 years when I finally learned how to not drown orchids, is sending up 3 spikes this year, so I'm looking forward to a long late winter/spring display from it.

Saki looks very lovely indeed. I was so sorry to miss the moot this year. Maybe next time. It sounds as if a good time was had by all. Moots are such fun!
Your Menorah is lovely. I like the different color candles. I hope you had a lovely holiday.

That sounds like a good plan. We just might have to work that out and give it a go. Maybe sometime in March after it gets a bit warmer and my work settles down a bit. First of the yr is always bad at my job. Lots of overtime just now. By March, I should be able to do some traveling.

Ooh, what a beautiful orchid!

I'm so sorry I had to miss the moot, which sounds lovely even if small. And I'm glad The Hobbit is growing on you!!

I love that pic of the menorah and orchids, such a lovely grouping. And yes, Saki, you.re lovely too :-)

Thanks for the moot report, always enjoy reading those.

What a beautiful display, it's especially difficult to keep and grow orchids. Or for me, any flowering plant.

Great moot report, I'm waiting until I see The Hobbit again before doing a review but might do one without it if it looks to be a while before I get back to see it.

I killed every orchid I got until I learned that I was drowning them with over care. About one shot glass or 3 ice cubes a week is all one in a 4" pot wants, and only one ice cube or half a shot glass for one's in 2" cups.

Thank you! I saw you had a review and plan to get over and comment soon.

you have a really beautiful chanukkiah in the background of the photo with the cat, too! pretty :)

That's my Elvish menorah. Who knew about those Elves? :-D

I love the picture of your menorah with the orchids.

The moot sounded low key, but very nice. I'm glad you got to see it with friends.

Your menorah and orchids make such a gorgeous display.

it's not FotR, but it's a lot of fun and beauty.

It certainly is. I'm so grateful for this gift of "The Hobbit", and good friends with whom to celebrate its magic.

wow, your menorah display is beautiful!

And I'm so glad you got to moot! That all sounds delightful!

Aww..>Saki always in a box! ♥

Thank you! (-:

It was a good time! (-:

She loves the box game. Moo and Tuxie don't quite get it, and wonder at it.

Great photos! It was great to see you and the moot (well, the part I could come to) was so much fun! :)

What a lovely hannukiah! I would say somuch ore but She Who Must Be Obeyed (see icon) is demanding attention.

I have to agree: "it is not FOTR, but a a lot of fun and beauty". I've seen it four times now and can def say it ain't FOTR. But I love who (for me) is The Most Important Person in it: Bilbo. A beautiful, beautiful job by Freeman. And Andy, of course. His Gollum only gets better (or worse, depending on your pov)

Glad you had such a nice moot, even if low-key. Sometimes those are the best times!

And i love your menorah...and hope you'll give me some orchid tips. My orchid hates me. At least....it seems to......

happy New Year, dear LT!

LJ never sent this comment to me inbox--poor LJ.

He is a wonderful Bilbo, though I've had a revelation about who he really is, that you'll see in my latest post, tricksy Bagginses! And Andy was amazing, too. And WETA allows us, as Claudia says, to just roll around in Middle Earth, bless them.

Yes, low key is usually the best.

As I was telling Romeny above, I killed every orchid I got until I learned that I was drowning them with over care. About one shot glass or 3 ice cubes a week is all one in a 4" pot wants, and only one ice cube or half a shot glass for one's in 2" cups. Mine are also very happy in my south facing window that is sunny in the winter and covered in thick shade in the summer. They like humidity, which the DC area specializes in, and don't like drafts.

Happy New Year, bb!!! *hugs*

From: [identity profile] jan-u-wine.livejournal.com

i have killed MORE orchids (well, okay, i've killed two now). I can't figure it out. I don't over water and i keep them inside here. They do well for a couple months, then drop their leaves like a Fro falling on his arse.

sigh.

I have a new one now. We'll see how it g(r)o(w)es....

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

I've killed several over the years. Though I think my main mistake was the over-watering, they also need to keep out of drafts, get good light--they seem to be happy with full sun in the winter and filtered light in summer. They also like humidity, which is easy to maintain in my area and in my cinderblock building since cinderblock absorbs moisture. That would be the challenging factor in your climate. If you have a misting bottle, I'd try misting them a couple of times a day.

From: [identity profile] jan-u-wine.livejournal.com

The first one i definitely over-watered. the second? i dunno. So we will see with number #. I will try the Misty Orchids thang, thanks!

From: [identity profile] frolijah-fan-54.livejournal.com

I'm so glad you were able to moot together and see The Hobbit!!

My hat's off to anyone that can grow orchids - I have such a black thumb. Your orchids are beautiful and your menorah is lovely as well. And Saki is definitely the commander of the Plum Hork - very regal.

Happy New Year, LT - I hope it's a great year for you!! *hugs*

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Orchids need humidity, which the DC area specializes, but that they need to be watered very sparingly is what I've learned after killing several with over care. Saki just likes to see her mom smiling at her, and no mistake. (-:

Happy New Year to you, bb! May it be a good one for both of us! *squooshes*

From: [identity profile] obeliamedusa.livejournal.com

Thank you, my dear! And that picture of Saki is adorable. :)

I got to see The Hobbit again yesterday and I loved all the Bag End scenes, and Bilbo scenes in general, even more.

*hugs*

:-D

That was the effect the second and third viewing had on me. (-:

I'm glad to know you liked the movie better the third time you saw it. It takes some getting used to, I think, because it's so different from LotR.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

And it's different from Tolkien's book, too, so yeah, I always have some canon shock to shed. It's really grown on me.
