Dear Nature,

I'm sorry for using the word "hype" in respect to what you were planning for us this evening and through the night. It really was directed at the media and not you, but I do understand how it still might not sit well with you. A town next to us is already clocking 57 mph winds and we may get up to 90 mph this evening. Some of the trees out my window have been doing full dips. I know you plan on running directly over the cat I'm looking out for in Warwick. Please be kind. You're bigger than us.

Hurricane Sandy

So that's the latest graphic from NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) National Hurricane Center. Apparently, Sandy will be doing pirouettes from here up to Trenton, as she spins north, delighting the whole Delmarva peninsula, southern New Jersey, and most of PA to boot. I am impressed we haven't lost power yet--good on ya, Pepco, though I'm sure we will sometime tonight, so here's hoping it won't last longer than the fridge can hold. I'm so sorry for the coastal peeps dealing with the storm surge--theirs is always the worst of it; the price that goes with looking out onto majestic beauty each day.

I sat down to watch Hawaii 5-0 at 10, and got an hour of Sandy instead. To sum up: Big storm. Big, big, big, strong, violent, long-term storm.

I am very glad I'm not in the Appalachians, where they're saying 2 feet of snow and blizzard conditions.

OTOH, they included footage from Cleveland (where I think Romney was harassing people while trying to pretend he wasn't still campaigning in the Face of Natural Disaster!) with the followup by the newsperson noting the high winds that had already gotten to town. As she blathered on about the windspeeds and so forth, I snorted to myself, "Heh. Cleveland can handle it."

I hope you get through safely. And the same for Brigit.

Hope you still have power and that things are ok where you are. So far, we have power and most of the weather problems we were supposed to get haven't turned up. I'm very grateful for that, but as it gets closer to the evening, I do worry that everyone trying to stay warm will cause a power over-load. I'm keep my cell phone charged just in case.
I hope all our friends are safe and warm. (hugs)

holy crap. I'm so worried about all my friends out east. Please, please you and the kitties stay as safe as possible!!!

Thank you, honey! My homecrew and I should be safe in our cinderblock building. My main property worry is a tree falling on, or blown into my car. My main home worry is really for the inconvenience of power outage, and hoping it will come on before I lose the food in my fridge. I've been hearing the sound of bad blow outs around here with flickers in our power, so I don't think we'll have power too much longer. And I just hope Brigit isn't sheltering in a shed that will blow down.

I'm a little surprised you still have power! The Pepco outage map has a big ol' outage marker over your area already (inspires confidence, doesn't it? :-p). My power has flickered three times over the past few hours, but we're still due for the worst of the winds... I share the worry about a tree vs. car incident. :-\

*hugs*

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Oh wow! I'm looking at that "outrage" map now, too. Heh! Maybe my scolding worked--they said, "There's a reeeeeally cranky email writer in that building over there--make sure it stays on, will ya?" ;-D

I got those same flickers, and I heard transformer explosions that sounded really close right before each flicker, which made me really nervous. But all of the street I can see is fine, so we must have really lucked out here. My Gwaihir sends regards to your jeep. The storm is giving me a lousy headache--meh.

*squooshes*

Haha, that could be! ;-D

Oh, good, I'm glad you said that about the headache... I thought it was just me.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

(-:

No, I usually get storm headaches. It's the drop in the barometric pressure that supposedly does it for those of us who are sensitive to it. Being a weather witch is not all it's cracked up to be. And I'm sure the stress of this event just adds to it. /-: *sends soothing thoughts to your head*

Man, it's a scary looking weather map. I'm hoping your kitty will survive. I feel so worried for the people on the coast. We're getting tons of rain and wind, but we won't get a storm surge.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

I just hope Brigit hasn't chosen a shed that will blow down--that's my worry. I hope she's gone for her natural environment of old cars to hide under--that would be the best shelter in mild temps, provided a large enough tree doesn't fall on it to cave in the bottom.

It's going right on us as it turns. I think the worst of the storm surge for the coast is over now--it's what got pushed in front of the storm that is the worst. For people inland dealing with rivers, though, that will build up thru the storm. I'm glad we're both on high ground. *hugs*

I'm glad you still have power and have my fingers crossed that it stays on.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Thank you, hon! We are very lucky so far because a lot of poor people around here are without power. I'm going to go bake some beer bread presently and hope the power will continue to hold during that.

From: [identity profile] jan-u-wine.livejournal.com

in sympathy with YOUR power outtage, we've had one here in Cali. I lost all the work i'd done since noon on my computer. But hey. I got to go home early. There's a mithril lining to many clouds....

i'll be looking for your post tomorrow morning, saying that all is well........

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Eeeeeerg!!! I hate losing work--I'm so sorry it got you. I wish you got to go home in a less frustrating event.

Thank you! There is little risk to life and limb for my kitty homecrew and me, so no worries, but I will be delighted if we get through the night with no power loss.

From: [identity profile] jan-u-wine.livejournal.com

just getting to go home was a boon. Tomorrow we shall see if any work survived, but i doubt it. Well, the cheery side is that i'll get some OT!

Glad to hear not much threat to you and the furry fam and will look forward to hearing the 'all clear' tomorrow.....

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

I hope you don't have to stay too late today. *hugs*

All is fine here. The worst of it for me was a barometric pressure headache that worsened during the night, and is coming on and off in waves today--I guess the pressure is shifting quite a bit. My mom and brother's house was in the direct line of fire from the storm in south jersey, but they got through it all with no power loss or any trouble.

From: [identity profile] jan-u-wine.livejournal.com

so glad to hear about your mom and brother and also that you are doing ok except for the headache.

i managed to reinput all my work and i am now leaving for the day....

i am very saddened to see the devastation on the news page of Yahoo. I am not a religious person, but i am thinking that perhaps there are no atheists in fox-holes and hurricanes. I am praying for all of you out there. Don't discount what could happen, thumbing your nose at Mz. Sandy. Be brave by being safe.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Yay for successful reinputting and timely leaving!

No thumbing nose from me, m'am! The coastal peeps got it badly. As did those in the way of uprooted trees and structures. I'm hoping one small cat was not one of those.

From: [identity profile] ladysnaps.livejournal.com

i'm keeping fingers crossed we keep our power too. it's flickered but still on. i can't imagine what those in direct path are gettting if we're getting pounded by rain and LOTS of wind. i got the candles and flashlights ready just in case.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

I hadn't realized this storm was covering Ohio, too. I'm amazed we still have power. Let's hope things hold out for both of us. *hugs*

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Thank you, dear. *hugs* I'm grateful we still have power right now on my street with the way it's blowing out there. I hope to get out to check on our girl on Wed or Thurs if the roads aren't still flooded.

From: [identity profile] romeny.livejournal.com

Am thinking about you hon. Your cat probably has a safe place she can find to wait this storm out. Now that it's Tues AM I'm feeling more hopeful about things but still anything can happen between before it's all over.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Thank you, hon, and I was thinking of you through the storm since you were a litte closer ot the direct path. My home crew kitties and I got through the storm fine except for a barometric pressure headache, that is still coming and going. I think the only people who are in trouble now now are those who are close to rivers and streams. I hope Brigit was careful and made it OK. I'll go up and check on her tomorrow or Thursday, and maybe take a look at the coast. That icon of yours is pretty!

From: [identity profile] grey-wonderer.livejournal.com

Stay safe. Glad you still have power. I'm in WV and we ate getting snow. So far we still have power but if the snow continues it won't be long till we have trees in the lines or something. I have my fingers crossed for your wild kitty. Take care.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

I know in some of high places in WV they are getting hit with a blizzard and 2 feet of snow. Are you in that path? I'm crossing my fingers you won't lose power. I hope Brigit was smart through the storm and got herself a good shelter. I'll go check on her tomorrow or Thursday. The squirrels and birds out my window are getting back to business as usual.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Thank you, bb! How are you faring today? I'm crossing my fingers you still have power.

From: [identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com

How did the storm go? I hope all is well with you and your cats. Speaking of, I'm intruding in your journal for a reason. I was adopted by a feral kitten this morning (http://singeaddams.livejournal.com/447544.html?nc=4#comments) and Claudia said you know all about feral cats. She's dusty, scruffy, and hungry but she's a purring love-bug and she used her litter box like an expert so I don't think I'll have many adaption issues. Still, I'm curious about health problems I need to look out for and some good, general advice. If you have the time, that is. Thanks!

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Heeee!!! Congratulations on being a new hoomin servant! (-: She looks lovely. Your kitty is most likely a stray, rather than a feral. If she was born in the wild, then she's gotten used to being handled by kind people since she was wee, and is thoroughly domesticated. (-: Your apartment management sounds really good that she's trying to get tenants to take the strays in and care for them--I have a flistmate who hadn't been so lucky with her management, who went into her patio to throw out things she put out for the ferals. I've had problems with people throwing out the shelter I set up for the feral I look after.

Take her to the vet as soon as you can make an appointment, and get her blood work to make sure she doesn't have kitty FIV, and if she's OK, get her inoculations, get her checked for fleas, and get her spayed, or him neutered if it turns out he's fooled you on gender. She will be clean and dust free in no time if you keep her inside. And if she likes to be brushed, you can assist her in that. Make sure you have fresh water out for her every day. And find out what foods she likes. There's controversy over wet vs dry food, but I'm convinced by the side that says wet is better. However, one of my adopted strays only likes dry food, and a particular kind, so they sometimes have their own positions in the controversy. (-; If you live in a small space, like me, I recommend crystal litter--it absorbs the smell better and keeps my apartment from having that litter box smell, except for the moments right after they use it.

Enjoy your new baby, and if I can be of further help, let me know! (-:

From: [identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com

*takes notes*

Will do on all of it, especially the crystal litter because, I swear to god, something crawled up my cat and DIIIIED! My apartment is small and the fumes woke me up last night. Wow.

Thank you very much for the great advice. I'll gladly pick your brain again if her head starts spinning or whatever.

From: [identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com

Yeah, they can do that. The crystals won't totally solve that, but they do help. But it's better than teaching the little buggers to use the toilet, like some people actually do. Yes, it would be lovely to not have to scoop the litter box, but the last thing I want to deal with when I really need to go is waiting for a kitty to get off the toilet, or have the other 2 kitties look at me and tell me to take a number and wait my turn. (-;

You're welcome. How's she doing? Is her fur smelling better yet, now that she's been in a few days?

From: [identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com

She's doing great! Her 'emissions' are still eye-wateringly strong but since I gave her the dreaded BATH (actually a good rinse) her fur is no longer sticky, dusty, and smelling of skunk/ash/garbage etc... and she's a properly cute, soft, and fluffy kitty now. Awwwwww!
