I've been having trouble uploading to Scrapbook, so I've been backed up on birthday greetings I've wanted to post for over a week.

So lacking a pic of a coyote, but having seen one approaching at night when I was guarding Brigit while she ate, I bring Brigit the More Than Halfway Feral Kitty, who is surveying what I've got for her in the back of my car, to wish a belated happy birthday to [personal profile] supergee! <3

Brigit says, Is There Cake in that Car? 7-12
Is there cake in that car? 'Cause there better be cake! And it better be for me!

I still recommend the Daily Coyote site for weekly coyote domesticity viewing happiness. (-:

That pic of Brigit is from July, when she shed all the fur off her sides. She is doing well. Her coat is still sun-bleached a lighter gray, but she's growing in her winter coat and I can just touch her enough to know it's as soft as it's looking--far healthier looking than when she lived in the Metro garage. How much red you see in her coat depends on light shining directly on her and the angle. She always comes to meet me when I visit once a week to refill her kibble autofeeder and give her a bowl of wet food. I expanded and fortified her feeding station this week, adding a second autofeeder to keep her going longer for weeks when I might not be able to make it out to Warwick. I'm crossing my fingers that people will continue to allow her feeding station and shelter to remain intact where I set it up behind the old church on a big round cement sewer cover along the woods. I don't know how much of the kibble she really eats, as there are other strays and ferals about who partake of it. So far, so good this year. Now, if I could interest someone local to take an interest in helping me keep it up, it would be a further blessing.

Oh, what a beauty she is! I'm so glad she's doing well. Sending good luck and positive vibes to you and to Brigit. :)

You are such a kind heart, I just wish folks would take responsibility for their pets.

Thank you. I wish they would, too. Though Brigit is the child of another feral, so I don't know how many generations they go back to a domesticated cat who should have been spayed.

She and her sister were around the garage when I'd get back from work and made my day brighter, so we go way back now. (-; Coyotes aren't so bad--all I had to do is stand up, and it immediately turned around and loped away quickly. And I trust Brigit has holes in the brush she can get through that the coyote can't. Humans are the menace I worry about.

It's lovely that you are doing this!! With pics like this one, couldn't you try to find someone to adopt her?

Thank you. I would love to find someone who would take her in, but she's still more than half way feral and I can't promise that will change, so she's not an easy adoption candidate. I don't know how things are in Germany, but here there are more affectionate, human-loving cats than there are homes for because irresponsible people let non-neutered cats run around producing kittens, and some are killed everyday by brave shelter workers with no other options. And, unfortunately, Brigit is not an affectionate, human-loving cat.

I've been working with her for going on 4 years now, and though she comes when I call, trusts me to guard her, and lets me sit an inch away from her, she flinches every time I touch her. It's getting better month by month; a year ago, I couldn't touch her, but I can't promise yet she will ever want to be pet, and not many people want a cat they can't pet. I can't promise she won't pee all over the place, or be able to adapt to an indoor life, or if she would spend the rest of her life hiding under a bed. Aside from the sister she lost, she doesn't get along very well with other cats who have come around, and there are few foster homes who have room for a cat who doesn't get along with others. In such an environment, she'd probably spend most of her time hiding.

Brigit has been spayed. There's a movement among cat rescue workers in the US to trap, neuter, and release back where they were found all the feral cats we can get our hands on, and try to talk people all over the country to not round up these cats and have them killed. When we can't talk people out of trying to kill cats roaming around their land or community, we try to trap them and find places that will allow the cats to roam.

Right now, unless she becomes more affectionate over the years, the best home for her would be a farm that doesn't have any alpha cats, has good shelters and woods with no busy road nearby, and a human who is willing to take time with her to earn her trust.

If you hear of anyone in North America who you think might have room for her, please let me know. I'm pretty sure I can catch her, and I would try to drive almost anywhere if I felt certain someone could provide a safer environment for her than where she is right now. <3

As far as I'm aware we don't have to put down cats, which is a good thing!

But yes, if she's still half feral it would be difficult anyway. The only one on my flist who I think lives on a farm is Withywindle - but I think she moved a while ago. Do you know her? Maybe you could ask her.

There are similar neutering programmes for the Mediteranean countries where they have a problem with homeless cats. It's a shame that so many people are so irresponsible but it's great that you are devoting so much time to this!!! *big big hugs*
