Storm Damage

We had a huge storm yesterday afternoon--looked like hurricane strength winds from the way the trees were swaying and the way the streets look today with downed trees and branches. I've gotten over my very sensible storm phobia that I had for a few years after the tornado here, so it was fun to watch.

My power and telephone at home are still out, and it might not be back for a couple of days. I'm at work right now, and I'll get what email I can from work, but I don't have internet at home right now, so bear with me, please. I can charge my cell phone here at work so I will be reachable by cell tonight.

I have 2 battery operated 12" fans I got earlier this year, which felt like my best investment eva last night. The storm broke the 100 degree weather and 110 heat index we've been having, but it will still go up into the 90's today, so I feel bad for my kitties at home today. My building is shaded cinder block so hopefully, it will stay in the 80's in there. I went out and got ice before going to work this morning in hopes of saving the stuff in my fridge, so crossing my fingers we'll get the power back on this afternoon, but if not, there goes another couple of hundred bucks in ruined groceries down the drain, and I'll need to hit up Home Depot for a bunch more D batteries.

Holy cow! I hope your power comes back SOON. Battery-powered fans are an awesome idea.

Adventures in camping at home continue. They are awesome--just wish D batteries lasted longer--still I'd rather awesomer air conditioners were back.

Oh, my, I hope you get your power back soon. I sent you an email.

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I got the email. Still no power, nor hot or even cool water, just cold water. Cranky Lavender is cranky.

Oh gosh, not the way you want to have the heatwave break. :( I'm very glad you and the kitties are okay, though!! I hope the power comes back on soon. *hugs*

I knew it would take a hurricane--the winds were 70 mph. But adventures in camping at home continue, and I is cranky.

I'm sorry my place is going to be an even bigger mess than usual on Saturday--so be set for ignoring clutter and strewn stuffses everywhere--meh. They said on the news everyone would be restored by Thursday, so I'm holding them to that.

We had a tree down in our yard, but luckily, still have power.
I'm sorry yours is out- hopefully Pepco(?) will get yours back on soon.

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Pepco--the power company that has an outage every time you sneeze . . .

I'm glad you got power--sorry about the tree though. Still waiting--after going through multiple days out in winter, it's just cruel to be doing it again in the summer--stoopid year.

I wondered how you were doing, but my phone was nearly dead so I couldn't call. (Getting a car charger is one of my to-do items for this week. :p)

I do have power again, so let me know if there's any way I can help you out with the fridge stuff or whatever. :)

Where did you get the battery operated fans? I need to invest in one...

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, mine was down to, though it's back today. Power is still out, so I need to throw out everything in the freezer, but I might take you up on some stuff in the fridge if adventures in camping at home continue when I get back this evening--thank you.

I got them at Giant earlier in the year, so they're not there anymore. But a coworker said she found some at Walmart recently.

By all means, let me know! (I find that camping at home is only fun if it's voluntary. :p)

Ah, okay. I shall have to be on the lookout, then. Thanks! :)

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-28 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's back--yay!!! Thank you for the offer. *hugses*

Bingo did that mount doom reenactment last weekend, huh?

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah--living with hobbits is cranky-making; don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Oh gosh how awful!

We had a strong wind gust go through Saturday, and the tornado sirens in town went off, but if was very brief and no significant damage here.

Hope power is back quickly! Sorting through a fridge gone warm is a pain!

Just found out my daughter's office in greenbelt was closed today because they lost power too!

Yeah, I can't wait until we get a real hurricane this year. Maybe I'll get to throw out everything in the freezer a third time this year, or more. Still no power, and no warm water. Over 100,000 households are still without. It's been a cruel year, and no mistake!

She isn't working in Greenbelt now, is she?

[identity profile] belleferret.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
3 times!! Yikes! That must be awful being without power for so long. I've never had to go more than 7-8 hours.

Yes, she's temping at ASRC Federal, soon to become a real employee! :-D

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
No, this is number 2, but I'm fully expecting a third this year with the predicted rough hurricane system. Yeah--losing the food staples, being without warm or hot water, being stuck in humid heat is cranky making. All the other stuff is pretty manageable for me. I'm just too old for this camping stuff, thus I kvetch. (-:

I just looked that up and that's halfway between Cali and me, so less than a mile away from my place. I know that office park well--it's one of the places I like to drive through in spring for the nice show of flowering cherries, plums, and pears. If her car breaks down or she gets stuck there for some reason, tell her to give a call.

[identity profile] ninjamidget66.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, Dearie. I hope your power is back by the time you get home. We got pretty strong winds, but not this bad.

The kitties will find the coolest spot in the house, no worries about that. If they can find a way to open the fridge and steal the tiny bit of coolness left in there, they will I bet. :)

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hoping for tonight now . . . I had to go to the gym to get a shower this morning, but at least there is a place to go. I'm just cranky and ready for adventures in camping at home to end.

They're doing OK--80 degrees is fine with them, as long as I'm careful not to get cranky on them.

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds incredibly unfun, and I'm definetely crossing digits for you!

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I hope they get our power back tonight, but it might take until Thursday. Meh. Is cranky.

gosh, between hearing yours and Cali's reports, that is one wicked storm!!! Hope you'll have your power on soon and that the kitties don't suffer too much!

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the kitties are OK--they're excused from doing any chores until we get the power back. They're just wondering why mom is so stressed and cranky and why she was cursing at the battery packages that are as bad as the wrapping on medicine you can't get open when your head is pounding--but it was kind of entertaining to watch, all the same.

[identity profile] romeny.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I was worried about losing power during yesterday's storm but we were lucky. Sorry about your woes, hope you won't be out of power too much longer.

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks--still waiting with 100,000+ other households. It's just like this winter all over again.

[identity profile] strangemuses.livejournal.com 2010-07-26 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hope your power comes back soon. I lost power 4 times yesterday but it came back. ALL of the street lights by me are out and the roads are a mess of broken trees. We lost power in one of our buildings at work and the entire email/internet network was out at work.

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Still waiting, but then all you have to do is sneeze and Pepco has an outage, so it will be fun to see what a real hurricane manages to do--I'll be very surprised if we don't get one before fall is over.

[identity profile] cyloran.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
We were pretty lucky here in Manassas. Just 15 minutes of 70 mph winds followed by half an inch of rain before it swept on outta here -- probably right into your neck of the woods. Hope you get your power back soon!

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can very well believe those were 70 mph winds from the way the trees were bending over and cracking as I watched from my window--I don't remember it looking worse during Hurricane Isabel. Thank you! I hope it doesn't take until Thursday, but I heard they won't get everyone up before then.

[identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com 2010-07-27 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Seventy mile an hour winds! You are lucky to have done so well. And what a great idea, the battery powered fans. But I hope your electricity is on sooner than later. I am assuming my mom's power didn't go out or I'd be hearing about it, from her or from my brother or her angelic neighbour who keep tabs on her every day. Eighty-seven years old, debilitated and heat-intolerant, I think she'd be dead!
