A snowy evening

The woods are lovely, dark and deep . . .

These are the woods beside my building at 9 pm this evening. The snow and pinkish white sky keep the dark at bay on a blustery night.

It started snowing around noon, but not really sticking until 4 pm. I got off work early, met Ostra hanging out around my car in the garage and fed her some tartar treats, then drove out to the Amish market in Annapolis and got some yummies for the snowed in weekend. The drive back from Annapolis was stunning, as the trees and grass were just starting to hold the snow, but the roads were fine. When I went out to clear my car around 8 pm, my car already had 4 or 5 inches on it. We're getting a minimum of 2 feet of snow, and maybe 3 before it ends tomorrow night. I've got purring furry ballast bags strapped to either side of me, so I'm snug for riding it out.

We only got a few inches, but it's blowing and some roads are apparently flooded so we're under a snow emergency. I'm hiding with my kitties, too. My view isn't quite as pretty as your woods, sadly.

I'm going to take some pics today for sure but I don't have a digital camera and won't be able to post them until getting them developed.

Thank goodness those strays have you looking out for them. I tried to go to market yesterday to get fresh onions and red and green peppers but they were all so packed, i din't have the patience to wait in line for an hr to get them.

It may have been because the snow was already starting, but there were no lines at all at the Amish market or the Shoppers Food Warehouse in Annapolis, so I really lucked out.

Where I didn't luck all the way out was it was our turn to lose power. We were without it from the middle of the night to 6 pm this evening--very glad to have it back now.

The snow has just about stopped here. It's hard to say just how much we had, it drifted so much, but I don't think it's more than 5 or 6". I do have a nice 3' drift in front of my garage though! :-O

Cuddle those kitties tight!!

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
It stopped around 5 pm here. Then my power came back around 6 pm--it had been out since the middle of the night. I'm very glad I can put the candles and flashlights and batteries all away. And that the stuff in my freezer seems to have made it.

There was much cuddling of cold kitties today! Though I can't complaint--the insulation here is very good and it only dropped to 60 degrees, which is fine enough for me.

Oh no! How awful to be without power for so long!!

Good thing you had those kitties (and good insulation) to keep you warm! We had the electricity go out during a snowstorm a few years ago. It only took a few hours for me to wake up at 3 am and realize it was getting darned chilly in the house. Fortunately, the electricity came back on by about 8 am. Turns out lightning (!) had hit a transformer at the substation right around the corner from my house.

How much snow did you get?

By the way, is it that huge Pennsylvania Dutch market you went to? Joy took me there last time I was visiting her. LOVED IT!

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
I am lucky to have the good insulation, so that losing power is a big inconvenience, but not a danger as it is for many--a good point to remember when maintenance are acting like jerks again.

We got between 25 and 30 inches. The piles now are way over my head--the streets are making me feel kind of claustrophobic.

The one next to the movie theater and across a plaza from a Barnes & Noble, yes? First time I went to that one--it was great. Pretty much a duplicate of the one that just opened in Laurel.

Why was the sky pinkish?

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
That's how it looks to me at least when it's about to and during snow.

I've commented to all these snow posts... we've been getting NO SNOW! And I LIKE snow! I'm in Massachusetts, FFS!! *shakes fist*!

I hope you are staying home and being safe and warm with the kitties! Wow, I can't imagine 3 feet of snow!!!! D: It's beautiful, but isn't it a bit like being buried alive????

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes it is. We were without power from the middle of the night until 6 pm this evening--I'm very glad to have it back and to put all the candles, flash lights, battery-run radios, and batteries away now, and that the stuff in my freezer seems to be OK. It only went down to 60 in here because the insulation is great, but the kitties wanted much petting. Yay for electricity restored!!! (-:

Food, heat, and purring furry ballast bags... what else does anyone need?

I love your posts. :)

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Electricity? Our electricity was out from the middle of the night until 6 pm this morning--I'm very glad to have it restored. But there was enough hot water for the shower this morning, everything in the freezer seems to be fine, I had things that didn't have to be heated to eat, and it didn't drop below 60 degrees in here, so it wasn't bad at all.

Awww, thank you! (-: *squishes*

[identity profile] mews1945.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to know you're safe and warm and so are your little fur people. It's snowing hard here, with drifts three feet deep all around. Our cars are completely covered except for clear spaces on the driver's sides, where the wind has scoured most of the snow off them. SIL is outside with his snowblower, but it's going to be a long, difficult process to clear our driveway, and I doubt the plows have been able to keep the roads cleared anyway. A good day to stay home and do as little as possible.

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
We were safe and warm enough, luckily, as our power went down from the middle of the night until 6 pm this evening. I'm very glad to be able to put all the candles, flashlights, battery run radios, and batteries away now. And I was very glad everything in the freezer seems to have made it.

I'm very glad your power held--and how cool is that that the wind kept the drivers sides snow free!!! I hope you took the opportunity to catch up on rest from all the bustle you've been having to take on lately.

[identity profile] rubynye.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Well, I hope you're still snug, surrounded by shining beauty rather than chill!

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm snug now that the power is back on--we were without it from the middle of the night until 8 pm this evening. It didn't drop below 60 degrees in here, so I'm lucky to have a well insulated place. I'm going to go out for a little bit and do some digging out, now that I knwo I have warmth to come back into.

[identity profile] ex-lbilover.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one amazing storm! I hope you are safe and warm and have power!! But with furry ballast bags and Amish market yummies, you're all set. :))

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
The furry ballast bags and the Amish yummies did keep me set as our power went out for about 15 hours! I'm very glad to have it back now, and to know I'll have a hot shower in the morning. I saw the top of one of our few pines break off outside my window this afternoon, alas, and the holly trees are all bowed into the gorund--hope they'll be able to spring back up. )-: It never went below 60 degrees in here so I'm lucky to have a well insulated place.

[identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com 2010-02-06 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Keep warm! I can't believe how much snow you guys have been getting. THIS is supposed to be the snowy place, but the east coast has got us beat by a mile.

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-07 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's our year to make up for our warm winter last year. That's amazing that we have ya'll beat, though.

Our power went out in the middle of the night until this evening, so I'm very glad to have it back and to put all the candles and flashlights away. I'm going to go out and do a little digging out of the car, now that I know I have warmth to come back to.

An LJ friend writing from VA to the west (Charlottesville? Fredericksburg?) says they lost power for a while, too, because of the wet snow and sleet mix that's been coating things there. They don't have the snow you're having, though, it sounds like. When I call my mom tomorrow, I'll get her report on how things look outside in her neighbourhood (she lives near Alexandria, VA, a D.C. suburb).

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I know Alexandria well, the downtown area at least. There's a Bilbo Baggins Restaurant there. There's such a weather system split over DC between Virginia and Maryland--it's sometimes like whole different regions. We may be hit with up to a foot more snow than the other side of DC Tuesday night.

[identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I hope the snow is not that deep. People are going to get worn out having to deal with it. Winter Wonderland it is, but enough is enough. (Speaking of winter wonderland, your icon is beautiful.)

I remember there being a divide in the weather, too. It often was snowier in Maryland than the Virgina suburbs. I wonder if the elevation is higher? It makes a big difference here. It'll snow a few inches down here at the edge of the lake, but three miles up the hill, there'll be two, even three times as much snow. And the difference in elevation is not like the difference between plains and mountains, it's just a hillside. But it's enough to make a big difference.

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking forward to not having to dig tomorrow before getting back to it Wednesday. I'm getting to feel like a mighty frontier woman, though. [livejournal.com profile] roxicons makes some gorgeous icons.

Yeah, I think that part of VA is lower and on a level with the swamp land DC was built on--Maryland is a little hilly out here. But if you go an hour or so further west and north n VA then you start hitting real mountains, beating the heights we have here in MD, except for our western panhandle going out to West Virginia.

[identity profile] mechtild.livejournal.com 2010-02-09 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Virgina to the west -- both north and south of D.C. -- is very beautiful. I haven't driven out that way, through the Appalachians, in a long time, and never in winter. Just the thought of it makes me feel *most* un-pioneerish. Nighty-night, Lavender. Sleep warm. :)

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2010-02-10 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Those roads in the snow are not for those of us with 2 wheel drive.
