Walking Around Greebelt Lake and a Birthday . . .

A very happy birthday to the lovely [livejournal.com profile] lovethosehobbit! Come on for a walk around Greenbelt Lake . . .

GBL1.10-12

This is how it looked a month ago when the trees were just beginning to put on their autumn finery. We had a brief autumn this year, cut short by the drought that browned out most leaves early, and ended abruptly by Hurricane Sandy and its tryst with the cold front that plunged us into an early winter. Normally, the leaves would be past peak right now, but there would still be many trees doing their own dances of bright color to prolong the loveliness past mid November, but the trees are uncharacteristically mostly bare now. Still, we had a lot of sunshine in October that made the few trees doing their dances of color shine with a subtler beauty, especially in the late afternoon light. So we'll continue around part of the lake below.

I hope you enjoyed the walk!

More pics of October walks around the lake will follow in future posts, especially for [livejournal.com profile] ladysnaps, who requested autumn pics.

These are beautiful photos! At least I'm assuming they're photos but the top one looks like a painting. Such a pretty!!

I never heard that about sunlight touching tree trunks during the last hour of daylight means the door between the worlds is open. Is that an old wives tale or something? Very evocative!

Is that one of the spots we walked that yr? Simply gorgeous.

Pretty icon! Yes, it's several of those spots. (-: It always is in October.

so very beautiful!!! Are you anticipating snow shortly, or are you still in the midst of Autumn?

[identity profile] lavendertook.livejournal.com 2012-11-13 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
We had a threat of snow last week, but it passed north of us. The post-Sandy front did bring us a few below freezing nights the last 2 weeks that have brought us winter early. It's been more seasonable the last couple of days, but the trees are more bare than they usually are at this time. We sadly got robbed of about a month of autumn this year.

oh, that is too bad. Maybe it will still hold off a bit from true winter. I hope!

Once I habituate to the cold after the first couple of weeks, I don't mind it--I take it better than heat. It's the leaflessness that gets me down. This one is going to be a looooong slog.

Sandy ripped most of the leaves off the trees when she came through. The pictures are lovely, though.

Same at the lake now--it's pretty bare there. There were still a lot of leaves on the trees on my route out to the eastern shore, but they're all brown. Between the super hot drought of the summer, and Sandy's winds and cold front, we got cheated out of half our autumn this year. )-: I was lucky to catch the few trees that were doing their autumn dance last month.
