Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] ancalime8301!!!!

I don't know if you got out to Annapolis often, but here's a pic I took at the docks when I was down there for the Women's march the other week:

DSCN8712

I know you're having to do a lot of traveling this year so I'm wishing you smooth sailing in getting through it all to some relaxing times, dear friend, and that you take some of that time when you need it. Maia and Hana will show you how because cats are experts in that. (-: *hugs*
Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] cali_se!!! I hope it's the beginning of a year full of magic for you!!!

I'm so sorry this is a day late post, hon, but I wanted to wish a very happy birthday to my dearest friend [personal profile] mererid!!! I hope the birthday dinner was excellent and you're having a good Sunday. I still have many pics from my trip out there last February that I haven't posted yet, so here's a couple:

A very happy birthday to my dear exuberant friend [livejournal.com profile] ekaterin24 aka [personal profile] zlabya!!!! I'm so glad we've gotten to be friends the last year--having you nearby makes my life so much better and fuller. I hope you've had a great birthday. Here is a sparkler tree for you as a birthday candle on an earth cake:

DSCN5490
A tulip poplar pretending to be one of Gandalf's fireworks--the one behind the fire station I told you to look up at, but taken a week ago. And here's your birthday moon:

DSCN5902
The supermoon rising over Greenbelt Lake a quarter hour after sunset this evening. Not that I can tell if it's any bigger than a regular full moon. If you look really close, you can see a gray dot along the shoreline a half inch from the left side of the pic--that's a great blue heron who just landed.

I also want to wish a happy belated birthday to [livejournal.com profile] just_ann_now! I hope it was a good one and there's a closer supermoon pic below for you.

Today I went to a brunch and movie in DC with my Jewish Lesbian group--it wound up being just 2 of us. But kibitzing over brunch and seeing a good movie was just what I needed today. We saw Denial with Rachel Weisz. It's about the 1996 trial in the UK between historian Deborah Lipstadt and Holocaust denier David Irving who was claiming libel against her. Wonderfully paced and well done.

I listened to interviews with Bernie Sanders and Michael Moore about the election on the radio on the way home, and they were calming. Then I took a walk and snapped the above supermoon pic and the one below the cut. So a much better day than the rest of the post-election week (excepting a lovely walk with [profile] zblaya on Friday and talking with ya'll.)

We are in need of magic today, so I went down to the lake at the day's last light and found the Lady of the Golden Wood had gifted my shire with a mallorn, and you can see its reflection in her mirror, an image of hope. We need that last light. As the Galadhrim of Lothlorien say, if the Sindarin here is correct, amin naa yassen he`.

DSCN5802

That would be translated, of course, as "I'm with her" in the Common tongue.

May all our shires be gifted with golden trees of hope tomorrow. Sleep well, my flist. <3

I had a nice weekend. Yesterday morning I lead a hike with a few members of my group for older lesbians around Greenbelt Lake a couple of times. Then we had lunch at the Silver Diner. I was wiped and achy for the rest of the day and was just lazy.

I took another walk around the lake today and then [personal profile] zlabya and I went to see The Queen of Katwe, a sweet uplifting film about a girl of Katwe, a slum of Kampala, Uganda, who becomes a chess champion. Formula upward mobility tale, excepting its not about white men, and nicely done, and what a beautiful new actress for the lead, Madina Nalwanga, and with the gorgeous Lupita Nyong'o as her mother.

So here's pics I took the last couple of days, if you'd like to come along:

Happy Birthday to Bilbo, Frodo, and especially, oft forgotten, early draft Bingo!!!

I went on a very Shire-like hike on Saturday morning in the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area in Howard County, and saw some things that should accompany the Bagginess on all their hikes.

Very Happy Belated Birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] blslarner and [livejournal.com profile] kittyfosterami!!! I hope it was a great birthday week for both of you.

I'm sorry I've been so absent lately. Things have been feeling hectic and busy--some good things, but a lot of stressful things.

But of the good things was the beautiful weather the last couple of days, and the gorgeous hike I went on today with the fun company of [personal profile] zlabya and a local women's hiking group to the McKeldin area of Patapsco Valley Park, about half way between Baltimore and Westminster.

So let me take you on the trail:

It's lined with little wild flowers, though you can't see them too well in this pic--lots of violets and spring beauties, among others.

And here's the Patapsco River we walked along most of the way:

Happy New Year, my friends!!!

DSCN3303

Today, I started the new year off right and went on a day hike with an lgbt hiking group from Riverbend Park, VA down to Great Falls on the Potomac River, pictured above. So beautiful. It was 5 or 6 miles and my knee is feeling it, but it was a beautiful day for it. I've been wanting to go on a hike with this group for a while, but they're usually longer and more challenging than I can yet handle. This was about my limit for now. There was a slight ocean scent on the breeze off the river--I never made it to the beach last year, so that was a very welcome scent.

Last night, I went over to [personal profile] synecdochic and [personal profile] sarah's party. We watched a vid of Into the Woods with Bernadette Peters, ate the wonderful foods, including buttery choco chip cookies they made, I met the famous Ginnycat,, and had a really wonderful time, but left before midnight, because I was up at 5:30 am.

So I've been more social this new year's than I've been in many months. I'm very glad I got out last night and today. This has been fun. Much cleaning, chores, and finishing of getting cards out the next 3 days. Of course, there will be walks, a swim, much cat hugging, and perhaps another BoFA viewing, if I can fit it in. Then the first day of my new job on Monday.

I am surrounded by snoring cats, and the sleep waves are heavy in the air . . .
Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] cali_se! I hope it's been a beautiful and magical day!

Late Afternoon Sunlight, Greenbelt Lake, 5-13
Late afternoon sunlight making magic of a stump with fungi on top in early May. This is by a feeder stream into Greenbelt Lake, a spot along a trail I hadn't been on before because it's usually a bit over grown with poison ivy by the time the foliage is out. Another find brought to you by this year's late spring.

Or, well, turtle and waterlily. For my bb [livejournal.com profile] jan_u_wine, who wished to see turtles. She requested a pic of my family turtle Cleo, who lived to be 20, but I don't have a pic of him. However, he was a red-eared slider just like the turtle with the waterlily here. He grew to be a couple of inches bigger than this one.

This Froday froggie wishes you a happy weekend!

DSCN1731

I saw this little American bullfrog down in Greenbelt lake in April. Not so little, this frog was as big as my hand, at least. I figured out the mystery of why I've been seeing so many frogs this year--it's due to the late winter. The grasses and shrubs that grow around the lake block my view of much of the bank at full growth, and they were late in starting. So the frogs came out of hibernation before the foliage grew high and thick enough to block my view. I'm not seeing as many frogs now through the shrubbery.

I've got so much to post. The orioles returned to the lake 2 days ago, so I want to post bird pics. And I went out to the cat sanctuary in Gettysburg yesterday, so I've got more cats to post. And tons of flora and fauna from around the lake. But first, for the city-philes and ship lovers on my flist, more Baltimore Inner Harbor pics from last month:

We finally got full sunshine today, and the buds on the trees are starting to open, so it finally feels like the first day of spring. That helps. We're definitely 2 weeks behind on spring now, after winter coming over a month early, so it's been quite a slog this year.

The vet was supposed to call me today about a question I had concerning Saki's medicine dosage, and never did. This definitely isn't working out. I feel so let down by every end of the medical establishment at this point. Infrastructure? Just not working here. Surprised? No. I lost my dad to surgery and poor aftercare, so am familiar with this tune.

As I have a lot of hunting among reviews to do yet, and yelp.com hasn't worked out too well for me, I was wondering if any of you have used Angie's List and found it helpful? Have you found any other review source for veterinary, medical, and dental providers useful that you could suggest?

Greenbelt Lake, 10-12
One great Blue Heron has been living on the lake since I came to this town 19 years ago. I don't know if this is the same one I've seen every year, but it just may be. I call hir Dinosaur and greet hir with this name whenever we meet. Another Great Blue visited with hir a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't seen the second one since, though ze might be around.
A very happy birthday to sweet [personal profile] shirebound! I hope the day was filled with snuggles and cake and fun! Most of these pics are from spring and summer 2011 around and near the lake.
