Hundreds of squatters have been evicted from a house and are causing a huge flap...

That is because the squatters are actually a colony of around 600 bats who have taken up roost in a house, near Romily, Stockport .

Despite the best efforts of the owner to get rid of the unwanted visitors, conservationists also stepped in to help clear out the infestation.

Now, in a bid to help rehouse these creatures, the council has taken the unusual step of building a real-life ‘bat cave’ - a state of the art hut in nearby Etherow Country Park.

The Dream Act of 2017 has been introduced in the Senate to protect DACA recipients. It has four sponsors: Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY). United We Dream asks for peole to telephone their Attorney General. The number they give is (832) 610-3896.

Their suggested message is "I am calling to ask the Attorney General to come out publicly to defend the DACA program. This program has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of immigrant youth across the country and it must be protected. I expect my attorney general to support the immigrant community and protect DACA."

meatball the cat chomping grass
Meatball doing his best pirate impression.

Every morning I take Meatball out to our vegetable garden. He likes to explore and chew bits of long grass. It's a good outdoor spot for him because it's fenced; I worry without some kind of boundary he'll run off after a chipmunk and get lost (or worse).

But today, there was a rabbit in the garden--almost full grown--and he went for it. (He was not pleased with me when I hauled him back inside.)

I know some cats are more confrontational than others, but is it common for cats to chase animals as big as they are? Does your cat do this?

I get the impression these are perfectly normal birds in the UK, but they're quite a novelty to me. Those fancy collars! There were three in the yard of the pub we stayed in, but they wouldn't sit still to be photographed. Here's one from the walk into town:

Short-eared owl
[Grainy photo of a short-eared tawny owl sitting on a lawn]

I know this isn't the greatest photo of all time. In my defense, I did take it from behind a dusty windowpane in an upstairs bedroom where I was crouched breathlessly lest I frighten it off.

There've long been barn owls living at my partner's parents' home in rural Norfolk, but I'd never seen any other type of owl there. I was surprised, therefore, to see this tawny owl (h/t to [personal profile] shapinglight for corrected identification) sitting on their lawn at dusk a couple of weeks ago. I worked out that it was watching a group of four partridges who were pecking through the pebbles in the drive, closer to the house. They seemed a rather optimistic target, given that the owl wasn't much bigger than they were.

The owl flew off and returned to the lawn several times whilst I watched, but never made a move on the partridges, who eventually moved onto the roof of the house and over to the other side.

I had to check the comm profile to try to decide if this was legit, as this was clearly not a wild pigeon; it was obviously someone's sleek, well-fed and well-cared-for homing/racing pigeon.

However, it was definitely "unsupervised", as it was hanging out at a gritstone crag eating bilberries and watching the climbers.

It wouldn't quite let people touch it, but was otherwise very comfortable with humans and happy to let you get very close.

I took a lot of photos of it trying to get a shot of the tags on its legs, as I was worried it was someone's beloved pet and lost. But when I got home, I found out that the "report a found pigeon" websites (they exist, naturally) say in rather weary tones not to even bother unless the pigeon's been around for at least 48 hours; apparently they like to take pit stops.

Four Republican senators have come out against the Senate's ACA replacement bill.

(Of course, McConnell is now moving to repeal with no replacement, so the fight's not over yet. Keep calling!)

But I have to celebrate this moment. If someone had told me in January that we'd get this far, I wouldn't have believed it! With luck, they'll find out that the straight repeal is just as unworkable as they thought it would be in February when they decided against it. And either way, we've made them spend six months on internal backstabbing, badmouthing, and time wasting that they can't get back, and a lot of ill will generated within the Republican caucus that won't be forgiven without a lot of effort.

Urban great crested grebe nest
[Macro image of a great crested grebe sitting on its nest.]

I spotted this great crested grebe brooding on its nest in the canal at Westerdok in Amsterdam. I thought its nest was a remarkable construction: the usual twigs, but also bits of plastic rubbish, and finishing touches of hollyhock. I was also impressed by the two female mallard duck bodyguards who immediately rushed over when I started taking photos. They didn't quack, but eyed me up silently as they circled the nest at a careful distance.

We were staying on a barge nearby for three nights and I checked on the grebe morning and evening. I don't believe it stirred from the nest in that time, so hopefully soon there will be some freshly hatched urban grebes learning to navigate the Dutch canal system!

I happened to be listening to some old 'blast from the past' sixties classics, and felt like drawing the boys.
Rodney's so smug and happy the next morning John can't resist grabbing his guitar and singing 'Good Morning Starshine' to him - one of the first songs he ever learned to play. Rodney scoffs at the ridiculous 'nibby nabby noopy' lyrics, but he finds himself humming it off and on all day in the labs, and smiling. (Here's an especially cute Muppet version of the song).

Haven't seen anyone posting about this, so here we are (copied from the Net Neutrality Day of Action materials from Battle for the Net):

On July 12, 2017, websites, Internet users, and online communities will come together to sound the alarm about the FCC’s attack on net neutrality. Learn how you can join the protest and spread the word at https://www.battleforthenet.com/july12/.

Right now, new FCC Chairman and former Verizon lawyer Ajit Pai has a plan to destroy net neutrality and give big cable companies immense control over what we see and do online. If they get their way, the FCC will give companies like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T control over what we can see and do on the Internet, with the power to slow down or block websites and charge apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience.

If we lose net neutrality, we could soon face an Internet where some of your favorite websites are forced into a slow lane online, while deep-pocketed companies who can afford expensive new “prioritization” fees have special fast lane access to Internet users – tilting the playing field in their favor.

I have only to add that I want my internet full of dynamic, accessible, user-created content and free exchange of information and the opportunity to get to know people, rather than passively consuming corporate-sponsored media. I want all of you guys in my life, not whatever big cable wants me to read and watch.

So far, 2017 hasn't been a banner reading year for me. I've read quite a lot (47 books at the time of writing) but haven't found as many heart-stopping, must rec favs as I did in 2016.

Even so, I've read enough wonderful books to put together both a Top 10 & an Honourable Mentions list for the year so far, so it can't have been all that bad. Here's what I've loved so far in 2017.

"I somehow missed that this was happening a few months back, so maybe other people did, too.

My Kindle for PC updated itself silently to version 1.19, which is compatible with Amazon's latest formatting. This is great for being able to use the new formatting! This is not so great if you use Calibre to manage your library. Calibre can't read or even recognize the new format, so can't import your books.

If you use Calibre, the easiest thing to do is to uninstall Kindle 1.19 and reinstall the older version, 1.17, and make sure that the "automatically update" box is unchecked.

The Mobileread forum has a thread on how to do this, including direct links to safe downloads of v 1.17 on Amazon. It also has instructions for other methods, if you don't want to downgrade your Kindle for PC/Mac."

We have reached the end of the quarter! It doesn't feel like mid-year, but here we are: July 2017, which feels like April 2045 in 2017 time. I did pretty well in my Q1 report, but didn't repeat this this time around. I've also done way more travel and work in Q2, plus had some bummer family stuff to deal with. This doesn't even include the awful bed bug infestation we're dealing with now...2017 has been A Year.

My 2017 reading goals:
  • Read 110 items.
  • Read 30 new women writers.
  • Read 10 nonfiction titles.
  • Space Opera Challenge: read 15 titles.
  • Read 10 books I own purchased before January 1, 2017.
  • Read 5% of my anticipated 2017 titles.
